How it works
This impossible dog word search hides DOG exactly once, in any of 8 directions, in a 15 by 15 grid of nothing but D, O and G. It is no prank: Show answers rings the word.

Why three letters make it so hard
A 15 by 15 grid has 1,456 places a three-letter word could sit, and DOG is in one. Filled by chance, the grid would spell DOG about 54 times. So the tool reads every line in all 8 directions and changes a letter in each extra copy until one DOG is left. About 170 false starts remain, each a D with an O after it.
How to hunt for it
Start at an O. If a D touches it, look at the square straight across the O from that D. A G there is the answer. On Hard about 3 grids in 4 hide DOG backwards, upwards or on a diagonal. Easy keeps it left to right or top to bottom, for younger solvers.
- Warm up on Bee: its grid is mostly B, with the answer on a line of E's reaching the edge.
- More different letters make an easier hunt: a Fetch grid holds about 60 false starts, a Puppy grid about 200.
- The grid here is 15 by 15; a 10 by 10 one has 576 places for DOG, a 20 by 20 one 2,736.
Questions and answers
What is the answer to the impossible dog word search?
Every press of Hide it again makes a new grid, so the answer moves. Press Show answers and the tool rings DOG where it sits in your grid. Press Hide answers to take the ring off for the next solver.
Is DOG really in the grid, or is it a trick?
It is there, exactly once. In 10,800 test puzzles made from the 15 words on this page, at six grid sizes and all three levels, every grid held its word once and only once.
How do I print it with the answer key?
Press Print or save as PDF. The puzzle prints on one Letter or A4 page with the grid 17 cm wide, and the answer key follows on page 2, so hand out page 1 only.
Can I hide my own word or my dog's name?
Yes. Type it over Dog in the list under the grid and the grid rebuilds from its letters. A word needs 3 letters, 2 of them different, and cannot read the same both ways, so Pup, Bob and Otto are refused.
