Counting pages
The reader writes the page where reading started and the page where it stopped, then works out Pages read. At the end of the week the column is added for the total and set against the goal the reader wrote. One version swaps Minutes for Parent initials.
Genres, new words and stopped books
The genre tally lists ten genres, each with twelve small boxes to shade as books are finished. The weekly sheet has a line under each night headed A new word and what it means. Books I finished or stopped has a tick for each and five stars.
- Let the reader write the goal: the line is blank on purpose.
- A book that was stopped still goes on the list, with the Stopped box ticked.
Questions and answers
What goes on a 4th grade reading log?
The date, the title and how far the reader got. This one asks for the page reading started on and the page it stopped on, so the reader works out the pages read.
Which genres are on the tally?
Realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, adventure, folktale, biography, informational and poetry. Each has twelve boxes, one for every book finished.
Which books belong on the log?
Any book counts. The sheet Books to try in 4th grade lists kinds to tick off, such as historical fiction, a myth, a science book and an autobiography. The grade is our suggestion: any reader can use any sheet.
