How it works
This reading log for 2nd graders opens on 15 rows: Date, Book title, a tick for Fiction or Nonfiction, Minutes and Parent initials. A Total minutes line at the foot is there for the child to add up.

Minutes and totals
The child writes the minutes for each sitting and adds the column at the end. The two-week sheet has a total line for each week, and the four-week sheet a total for the month. No sheet prints a target: how much to read is the teacher's call.
First chapter books
My first chapter book keeps one book on a page: Title and Author at the top, then a row for each sitting with the date, the chapter, the minutes and what happened. Another log has a tick for who the child read with: Myself, A partner or A grown-up.
- Add the minutes together on Friday, with the child holding the pencil.
- Ask which kind is ahead, fiction or nonfiction, and offer a book of the other kind.
Questions and answers
What goes on a second grade reading log?
The date, the title, the minutes read and a parent's initials. This one adds a tick for Fiction or Nonfiction and a line for the total.
Is there a log for a first chapter book?
Yes. My first chapter book has Name, Title and Author lines and 12 rows: Date, Chapter, Minutes and What happened.
Which books belong on the log?
Any book counts. The sheet Books to try in 2nd grade lists kinds to tick off, such as a first chapter book, a fairy tale, a book of animal facts and a joke book. The grade is our suggestion: any reader can use any sheet.
