How this list was compiled: Written for this page: each sentence has a blank for its verb and two or three forms of one verb under it, and only one agrees with the subject. The first set has plain singular and plural subjects with is and are, was and were, has and have, does and do, and verbs that add s. The second has two subjects joined by and, a phrase between the subject and the verb, and sentences that begin There is or There are. Subjects that can take either form (team, family, a group of) and verbs spelled the same in the past (read, set) were left out. The grade is from the Common Core language standard L.3.1f, read in www.thecorestandards.org/wp-content/uploads/ELA_Standards1.pdf on 2 October 2026. No person, brand or character is named. Licence: own work

How it works

A verb has to match its subject: one dog runs, two dogs run. Each sentence has a blank and two or three forms of one verb under it, and only one agrees.

Read the full guide

One or more than one

The page opens on this set: a plain singular or plural subject with is or are, was or were, has or have, does or do, or a verb that adds s. It includes plurals with no s, such as children, mice and geese.

Subject verb agreement worksheet 4th grade: tricky subjects

Pick Tricky subjects under Set. Two subjects joined by and take the plural verb. A phrase between the subject and the verb does not change it: the jar of pennies is heavy. After There, the verb matches the noun that follows.

  • Cover the words between the subject and the blank and read it again: the keys are, the jar is.

Questions and answers

What is subject-verb agreement?

It means the verb takes the form that matches its subject. A singular subject takes is, was, has, does or a verb with s (the dog runs); a plural subject takes are, were, have, do or the plain verb (the dogs run).

What grade is subject-verb agreement?

Grade 3 in the Common Core, which asks third graders to ensure subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement (L.3.1f). The standard is marked as one likely to need continued attention in higher grades.

Why is it the jar of pennies is, not are?

The subject is jar, and a jar is one thing. Of pennies only tells what kind of jar it is, so the verb still matches jar: the jar of pennies is heavy.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Printed or saved as a PDF, it is the last page, with the right verb circled and written into each blank. To skip it, uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options.
