How this list was compiled: Written for this page. In the first set each sentence has one direct object, the noun the verb acts on, and the three choices are its subject, its direct object and a noun that follows a preposition. In the second set each sentence has a direct and an indirect object, and one of the two is named to be labeled. The two terms follow Wikipedia's article Object (grammar), en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Object_(grammar), read on 2 October 2026 (CC BY-SA 4.0). No sentence has a linking verb, where the noun after the verb is not an object. No person, brand or character is named. Licence: own work

How it works

The direct object is the noun the verb acts on: in the goalie kicked the ball, it is ball. Each sentence prints three of its nouns to choose from. A second set adds indirect objects.

Ask what or whom after the verb

The robin carried what? A twig. That is the direct object. The other two choices are the subject, which did the carrying, and a noun that follows a small word such as to, in or on. A noun after one of those words is not the direct object.

Direct or indirect

Pick this set under Set. In Grandpa gave Nora a compass, the compass is what was given: the direct object. Nora received it, so Nora is the indirect object. Each question names one of the two to label.

  • With two objects and no to or for, the indirect object comes first: gave Nora a compass.

Questions and answers

What is a direct object?

It is the noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb. Find the verb and ask what or whom: she mailed a postcard, mailed what, a postcard. Some sentences have none: the baby laughed.

What is the difference between a direct and an indirect object?

The direct object is the thing acted on; the indirect object is the one who gets it. In Mom read the twins a story, story is direct and twins is indirect.

Is a noun after to or for an indirect object?

Not on these sheets. In I sent a card to Leo, card is the direct object and Leo follows the preposition to, which traditional grammar calls the object of a preposition.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The key is the last page, with the right word circled and written in the blank. To print the sheet alone, uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options.
