How this list was compiled: Sentences written for this site on 2026-10-03, each with one blank and three real words that look alike: words told apart by where the syllable breaks (diner and dinner, hoped and hopped), words built on a shared root (telescope, telephone, telegraph) and long words with prefixes and suffixes (disappointment, disappearance, disagreement). Each sentence was read with all three words, and only one makes sense. Every word offered is in the ENABLE word list, a public-domain list of English words. The three sets follow standard RF.4.3a of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, which grade 5 repeats word for word as RF.5.3a (syllabication patterns and morphology, such as roots and affixes, in multisyllabic words), read on 2026-10-02 in the standards document published at thecorestandards.org. The grades are our suggestion, not a school's list. No published word list or reading program was copied. Licence: own work

How it works

Each sentence has a blank and three words that look alike: diner, dinner and dimmer. Only one fits, so the reader has to work through every syllable. The same sheets serve as 5th grade phonics worksheets.

Read the full guide

Three sets

Set picks one. Syllable patterns, where the page opens, turns on where a word breaks: hoped or hopped, later or ladder. Word roots puts shared roots side by side: telescope, telephone or telegraph. Prefixes and suffixes uses long built-up words: disappointment, disappearance or disagreement.

Why 4th and 5th grade share a page

The Common Core gives both grades the same sentence (RF.4.3a and RF.5.3a): use letter sounds, syllable patterns, roots and affixes to read unfamiliar multisyllabic words. The grades are our suggestion.

  • The three words offered for each sentence are listed under the tool.

Questions and answers

What phonics is taught in 4th and 5th grade?

In the Common Core, both grades have one phonics standard: reading unfamiliar words of several syllables by their letter sounds, syllable patterns, roots and affixes (RF.4.3a, RF.5.3a). Earlier patterns, such as vowel teams, are on the pages for younger grades.

Can I get the phonics worksheets for grade 4 as a PDF?

Yes. Press Print worksheet, then choose Save as PDF in the print window. Each sheet has eight sentences, and its answer key is the last page of the file.

Do the phonics worksheets for grade 5 come with answers?

Yes. The key prints as the last page with the right word of each row circled. Uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options to leave it off.

Are these 5th grade spelling and phonics worksheets?

They are reading sheets: the child reads three words and chooses one, and nothing is spelled from memory. Spelling lists and spelling sheets for 4th and 5th grade are on the pages linked below.

Can I use my own sentences?

Yes. The box above the sheet takes one sentence a line: write ___ for the missing word, an equals sign and the right word, and put a slash in front of every wrong word. We ate ___ at noon. = dinner / diner / dimmer.
