A light word search on its own
Under Start from a list, Light has 24 words and makes a sheet titled Light Word Search: Reflect, Refract, Absorb, Shadow, and the three words for materials, Transparent, Translucent and Opaque. Light Sources and Colors adds 24 more, the seven rainbow colors among them. Mirrors, Lenses and Seeing has 21.
A light and sound word search for one sheet or two
Sound, with 22 words, gives the second puzzle: Pitch, Volume, Vibration and Echo, and Loud, Quiet, High and Low for the youngest classes. Making and Hearing Sound has 26, from Drum and Xylophone to Cochlea. Easy Light and Sound holds 54 words of 3 to 5 letters.
- Hear and Hearing are missing on purpose: Ear reads inside both, and the key would ring it twice.
- Glow stick, Optical fiber, Frosted glass and Ear canal hide as one run of letters: GLOWSTICK.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque?
A transparent material lets light pass through without noticeable scattering. A translucent one lets light through but can scatter it, as frosted glass does. An opaque material transmits no light.
What are the 7 colors of the rainbow in order?
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet: Isaac Newton's sequence of seven. Red is the outside band of a primary rainbow and violet the inside one.
How does sound travel?
As a wave of pressure through a medium such as air: a vibration passed along. In air at 20 degrees Celsius it moves at about 343 meters a second.
What is the difference between pitch and volume?
Pitch is the quality that lets sounds be judged as higher or lower. Volume, or loudness, is how strong a sound seems, on a scale from quiet to loud.
Can the light and sound puzzles print with clues instead of words?
Yes. Tick Show clues, not words, and Echo prints as "Sound that bounces back and reaches the listener later than the direct sound." The key follows as page 2, on Letter or A4.
