Graphing linear equations 12

  • graph The line or curve drawn on axes for an equation. The graph of y = 2x + 1 is a line.
  • linear equation An equation that draws a line when its points are plotted. y = 2x + 1 is a linear equation.
  • linear function A rule whose output changes at a steady rate. f(x) = 2x + 1 is a linear function.
  • ordered pair Two numbers, x then y, that locate a point. (2, 5) is an ordered pair.
  • point-slope form A line's equation built from one point and the slope. y − 1 = 2(x − 3) is in point-slope form.
  • rate of change The speed at which an output grows as the input grows. Going from 3 to 11 while x goes from 1 to 5 is a rate of change of 2.
  • rise The vertical gap from one point of a line to another. From (0, 1) to (2, 5) the rise is 4.
  • run The horizontal gap from one point of a line to another. From (0, 1) to (2, 5) the run is 2.
  • slope The ratio that measures the slant of a straight graph. The line through (0, 1) and (2, 5) has a slope of 4/2 = 2.
  • slope-intercept form The layout y = mx + b for the rule of a line. y = 4x − 7 is in this form, with slope 4 and y-intercept −7.
  • x-intercept The point of a graph at which y equals zero. For y = 3x − 6 the x-intercept is the point (2, 0).
  • y-intercept The point of a graph at which x equals zero. For y = 2x + 1 the y-intercept is the point (0, 1).

Expressions and equations 12

  • constant term A term that has no letter in it. In 3x + 5 the constant term is 5.
  • equality The state of two amounts being worth the same. 2 + 3 = 5 states an equality.
  • equals sign The symbol =. An equation has an equals sign; an expression has none.
  • equation A statement that two expressions have the same value. 3x + 5 = 20 is an equation.
  • expression A math phrase such as 3x + 5, which states no equality. An expression can be simplified or evaluated, not solved.
  • identity An equation that is true for every value of its letters. 3(x + 2) = 3x + 6 is an identity.
  • isolate To rearrange until one letter stands by itself. Subtracting 5 from 3x + 5 = 20 starts to isolate x: 3x = 15.
  • side Everything written to the left or the right of =. In 3x + 5 = 20 the left side is 3x + 5.
  • solve To work out which numbers an unknown can be. To solve 3x + 5 = 20 is to find x = 5.
  • substitute To swap a letter for a given value. Substitute 5 for x in 3x + 5 to get 20.
  • system of equations Two or more equations to be solved together. 2x + y = 7 and x − y = 2 form a system with x = 3, y = 1.
  • unknown A value not yet known, which the problem is about. In 3x + 5 = 20 the unknown is x.

Inequalities 12

  • at least That amount or more. At least 5 is written x ≥ 5.
  • at most That amount or less. At most 5 is written x ≤ 5.
  • endpoint A number at either end of a stretch of numbers. The interval from 2 to 6 has the endpoints 2 and 6.
  • greater than Being the bigger of two amounts, shown by >. 7 > 4 is read 7 is greater than 4.
  • half-plane All of a flat surface that lies on one side of a line. The graph of y > x is a half-plane.
  • inequality A statement that one quantity is larger than another. x + 2 > 5 is an inequality.
  • interval Every number between two given numbers. All x with 2 < x < 6 form an interval.
  • less than Being the smaller of two amounts, shown by <. 4 < 7 is read 4 is less than 7.
  • lower bound A value that no member of a set goes below. 2 is a lower bound of the numbers from 2 to 6.
  • satisfy To be a value that works when put in for the letter. 7 satisfies x + 2 > 5, since 9 > 5.
  • strict inequality One that does not allow the two sides to be equal. x > 5 is strict; x ≥ 5 is not.
  • upper bound A value that no member of a set goes above. 6 is an upper bound of the numbers from 2 to 6.

How this list was compiled: Term list chosen for this site on 2026-10-03. Each meaning is written in our own words and was checked that day against the entry for the term in Wiktionary, the free dictionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, and, for the terms with no entry or no fitting sense there (slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and rise and run in their graphing sense), against the articles Linear equation and Slope in English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. The terms were chosen with the articles Equation, Inequality (mathematics) and Expression (mathematics) of English Wikipedia open, read the same day. Every example is our own working. The example after each meaning is our own. Isolate, in its algebra sense, follows the article Elementary algebra of English Wikipedia, read on 2026-10-05, when every meaning was read against its source again. Licence: own work

How it works

This graphing linear equations vocabulary worksheet prints twelve terms down the left and their meanings, mixed up, down the right. The opening set also serves as a slope vocabulary worksheet or a linear function vocabulary worksheet.

An expression vocabulary worksheet and an equation vocabulary worksheet

In Set, Expressions and equations prints expression, equation, equals sign, side, equality, constant term, substitute, solve, isolate, unknown, identity and system of equations.

An inequality vocabulary worksheet

The third set prints inequality, greater than, less than, at least, at most, strict inequality, half-plane, interval, endpoint, upper bound, lower bound and satisfy. Under the tool each term has a worked example.

  • The sheet prints terms and meanings, with no grid and no line to graph.

Questions and answers

Is this a pre algebra vocabulary worksheet?

The second set, on expressions and equations, and the third, on inequalities, hold the words a pre-algebra class meets. The opening set, on slope and intercepts, goes with graphing lines.

What is the difference between slope-intercept form and point-slope form?

Slope-intercept form is y = mx + b, which shows the slope m and the y-intercept b. Point-slope form is built from the slope and any one point of the line, as in y − 1 = 2(x − 3).

What is the difference between an expression and an equation?

An expression, such as 3x + 5, has no equals sign and can be simplified or evaluated. An equation, such as 3x + 5 = 20, states that two expressions have the same value and can be solved.

Is there a graphing linear equations vocabulary worksheet key?

Yes. The key prints as the last page: the sheet again, with a line drawn from each term to its meaning. A check box under More options turns it off.
