Geometry Vocabulary Worksheet Matching

Press Print worksheet to match twelve geometry terms, from point, line and plane to locus, to their meanings.

A sample is on the sheet. What you type replaces it.

Points, lines and planes 12

  • construction An exact drawing made without measuring, by arcs and lines. Bisecting an angle with compass and straightedge is a construction.
  • Euclidean geometry The geometry of flat space taught in school, after Euclid. Euclidean geometry is named for the Greek mathematician Euclid.
  • intersection The point or points that two figures share. Two lines that cross have one point as their intersection.
  • line A straight path with no end in either direction. One and only one line passes through two different points.
  • line segment A straight stretch that begins and ends at set points. Segment AB runs from point A to point B.
  • locus The path traced by every point that obeys one condition. The locus of points 3 units from a point P is a circle.
  • midpoint The center of a segment, equally far from both ends. The midpoint of a segment 10 units long is 5 units from each end.
  • perpendicular bisector A line crossing a segment at its center at 90 degrees. Every point on a perpendicular bisector is equally far from the two ends.
  • plane An endless flat sheet with no thickness. A tabletop is part of a plane.
  • plane geometry The study of flat figures. Triangles and circles belong to plane geometry.
  • point A single position in space, without length or width. A point is named with a capital letter, such as point A.
  • ray A half-line: it starts at a point and never stops. A ray is named from its endpoint: ray AB starts at A.

Polygons 12

  • diagonal A line drawn across a polygon from one vertex to a far one. A rectangle has two diagonals.
  • dodecagon A closed figure with a dozen edges. In a regular dodecagon every angle measures 150°.
  • hendecagon A polygon with eleven sides. A hendecagon has eleven angles.
  • interior angle The corner space within a polygon, between two edges. The interior angles of a quadrilateral add up to 360°.
  • isosceles trapezoid A trapezoid whose two slanting sides are equal. The diagonals of an isosceles trapezoid are equal in length.
  • n-gon A polygon named by its count of sides, written as n. A 15-gon has 15 sides.
  • parallelogram A quadrilateral whose facing sides run in the same direction. Opposite sides of a parallelogram are equal in length.
  • polygon A closed plane shape with three or more edges, none curved. A polygon has as many angles as sides.
  • quadrilateral A figure with four corners and four straight edges. Squares, kites and trapezoids are quadrilaterals.
  • regular polygon A polygon whose sides match and whose angles match. A square is a regular polygon.
  • simple polygon A polygon whose sides never cross one another. A five-pointed star drawn with five strokes is not a simple polygon.
  • trapezoid A four-cornered figure with two edges that run the same way. The parallel sides of a trapezoid are called its bases.

Transformations 12

  • axis of symmetry A line that splits a figure into two matching halves. An isosceles triangle has an axis of symmetry through the middle of its base.
  • counterclockwise Against the direction in which clock hands sweep. Positive angles of rotation are measured counterclockwise.
  • dilation A change of size that keeps the shape the same. A dilation by a factor of 2 doubles every length.
  • enlargement A copy of a figure made larger. An enlargement by a factor of 3 triples every length.
  • glide reflection A flip over a line followed by a slide along that line. A trail of footprints shows a glide reflection.
  • half-turn A turn of 180 degrees. Under a half-turn centered at the origin, (2, 3) lands on (−2, −3).
  • invariant Not changed by a transformation. Lengths are invariant under a rotation.
  • mirror image A figure reversed left to right, as in a looking glass. The letters b and d are mirror images of each other.
  • reflection A transformation that swaps a figure for its mirror twin. The reflection of (2, 5) over the y-axis is (−2, 5).
  • rotation A spin of a figure about a pivot that stays put. A rotation of 90° counterclockwise about the origin sends (1, 0) to (0, 1).
  • rotational symmetry Looking the same after less than a full turn. A square fits onto itself after a quarter turn.
  • translation A slide that carries each point equally far, the same way. Moving a figure 4 units left and 1 unit down is a translation.

How this list was compiled: Term list chosen for this site on 2026-10-03. Each meaning is written in our own words and was checked that day against the entry for the term in Wiktionary, the free dictionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, and, for the terms with no entry or no fitting sense there (simple polygon, and dilation and reflection in their geometric sense), against the articles Polygon, Homothety and Reflection (mathematics) in English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. The terms were chosen with the articles Outline of geometry, Geometry, Glide reflection, Rotation (mathematics), Regular polygon, Trapezoid and Isosceles trapezoid of English Wikipedia open, read the same day. The coordinates and measures in the examples are our own working. The example after each meaning is our own. Every meaning was read against its source again on 2026-10-05, and simple polygon against the article Simple polygon as well. Licence: own work

How it works

This geometry vocabulary worksheet, matching terms to meanings, prints twelve terms down the left and their meanings, mixed up, down the right. Three sets cover points, lines and planes, polygons, and transformations.

A geometric vocabulary worksheet in three sets

Set opens on Points, lines and planes: point, line, plane, ray, midpoint, line segment, intersection, perpendicular bisector, locus and construction. Polygons prints quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, diagonal, regular polygon, n-gon, hendecagon, dodecagon and interior angle.

Transformations

The third set has translation, reflection, rotation, dilation, glide reflection, mirror image, rotational symmetry, axis of symmetry, counterclockwise, enlargement and half-turn. The words for angles and for circles have pages of their own.

  • The sheet prints words and meanings only, with no figure to label.

Questions and answers

What are the basic terms of geometry?

Point, line and plane come first: a position, a straight path without end and a flat sheet without end. A ray is half of a line, a line segment is a piece between two points, and a midpoint is the center of a segment.

What is the difference between a translation, a reflection and a rotation?

A translation slides every point of a figure the same way. A reflection flips the figure over a line. A rotation turns it about a fixed point. All three keep the figure's size and shape.

Is there a geometry vocabulary matching worksheet PDF?

No PDF button is on the page. Press Print worksheet, then save as a PDF from the print window of your browser. The key is the last page of what is saved.

What does the key print?

A second copy of the sheet, on which each term is joined to its meaning by a line. It prints last. See the answers, under More options, draws the same lines on screen.
