How it works
Every equation here takes two moves. The first sheet has 20 like 7x + 3 = 45 and 36 = 16 + 2y; Sheet type adds x/2 + 11 = 23, 7(x + 2) = 98, negatives, fractions and decimals.

Undo in the reverse order
7x + 3 means times 7, then add 3. Solving undoes the last thing first: take 3 from 45 to get 42, then divide by 7, so x = 6. A bracket turns the order round: in 7(x + 2) = 98 the 7 goes first, 98 ÷ 7 = 14, then 14 − 2 = 12.
Solving one and two step equations worksheet
Choose One-step and two-step mixed: x + 5 = 11 and 4x = 20 sit among 7x + 3 = 45, so pupils must decide how many moves each needs. For 2 step algebra equations worksheets with negatives, print Negative coefficients: −7x − 13 = 29.
- Common Core 7.EE.B.4a asks for px + q = r and p(x + q) = r fluently: the first and fourth sheet types.
- Collect the checks: 7 × 6 + 3 = 45 catches a pupil who divided before subtracting.
Questions and answers
What goes wrong most on two-step equations?
Dividing first. From 7x + 3 = 45, a pupil who divides by 7 has to split the 3 as well and usually doesn't. Subtracting first keeps every number whole: 45 − 3 = 42, 42 ÷ 7 = 6.
Are the answers always whole numbers?
Yes, on every sheet type of this page. The fraction and decimal sheets put the fraction or decimal in the equation, as in 3/4x − 2 = 7, and the answer still comes out whole: x = 12.
How do I get a two step equations worksheet as a PDF?
Press Print, then choose Save as PDF as the printer. The key comes out on its own page after the sheet; untick Answer key first to leave it out.
