Questions and answers

What is the difference between a hen and a rooster?

A hen is an adult female chicken and a rooster is an adult male. Roosters tend to be larger, with bigger combs and wattles, and they crow. Hens do not crow, but they cluck.

How long does it take a chicken egg to hatch?

About 21 days. The chick breaks out with its egg tooth, a small sharp point on its beak, and for about two days it feeds on the last of the yolk.

How many eggs does a hen lay in a year?

A hen bred for laying can produce more than 300 eggs a year. The highest rate on record is 371 eggs in 364 days.

Where do chickens come from?

From the red junglefowl, a wild bird of Southeast Asia. Genetic studies put the taming at about 8,000 years ago, though the earliest probable chicken bones, from Thailand, are about 3,250 years old. Chickens are now among the most common farm animals in the world.
