How it works

Eight lists in the order a farm works
The lists run in the order a farm works: Farm Animals, Animal Families and Herds, Fields and Crops, Orchard and Garden, Tractors and Tools, Around the Farmyard, Farm Jobs and Chores, and last From the Farm, 19 things a farm makes, such as Milk, Wool and Cider. Easy Farm holds 64 words of 3 to 5 letters. Hard Farm holds 27 of 8 to 11, Wheelbarrow and Irrigation among them.
Trace food back to the field
From the Farm lets a class work backwards. Bread needs Flour, and Flour is grain ground in a mill. Butter is cream worked in a Churn. Fleece comes off at Shearing time.
- Animal Families and Herds is a matching game: Piglet with Sow and Boar, Lamb with Ewe and Ram.
- The Ewe clue helps new readers: "The word is said just like you".
- Llama, Alpaca and Pony are in the animal word search, on its Farm Animals list.
Questions and answers
Why do the lists say Oats and Peas, not Oat and Pea?
GOAT holds OAT and PEAR holds PEA, so a solver could ring letters the answer key does not. The plurals fix that. Ox, too short at 2 letters, became Oxen.
Is the spelling American?
Yes: Plow and Yogurt. Meanings are American too. Cider is the unfiltered apple drink of the United States and Canada, and Corn is the tall grass also called maize.
Which farm list suits kindergarten?
Easy Farm: 64 words no longer than 5 letters. 11 are animals such as Cow, Pig and Hen, and 11 come from the last list, From the Farm, so a kindergartner can pair Milk with Cow and Eggs with Hen.
