Questions and answers
How many kinds of elephant are there?
Three: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant. The bush elephant is the largest living land animal. The forest elephant, of West Africa and the Congo Basin, is the smallest of the three.
What is an elephant's trunk made of?
Muscle. The trunk is the nose and upper lip joined together, with no bone. The Smithsonian's National Zoo counts about 150,000 muscle units in it. Wikipedia's Elephant article says it can lift 350 kilograms, or crack a peanut shell without breaking the seed.
What is the difference between African and Asian elephants?
African elephants have larger ears, a back that dips and two finger-like tips on the trunk, and both sexes grow tusks. Asian elephants have smaller ears, a level or rounded back and one finger, and only males have large tusks.
