Three butterflies and a moth, told apart by color

The Blue morpho opens the page: 112 squares on the easy grid in blue, black and brown. The Brimstone is yellow with orange spots, the Peacock butterfly is red with four eyespots and the Luna moth is green with two long tails.

A monarch's life in four sheets

Under Pictures in More options the last four run in order: the Egg on a milkweed leaf, the Monarch caterpillar, the Chrysalis and the Monarch. Printed at one size, the four sheets make a life cycle strip for a science unit. Choose Detailed 24 by 24 and the Monarch grows to 376 squares, 234 of them black.

  • Butterfly color by number printable: the easy Monarch needs only 2 crayons, orange and black, the fewest here.
  • The Monarch caterpillar's white bands and the Luna moth's white body print empty: leave them as paper.
  • The egg is drawn yellow so it shows on the leaf; a real monarch egg is cream or light green.

Questions and answers

What are the four stages of a butterfly's life?

Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult. Four pictures here show them for a monarch: an egg on a milkweed leaf, the banded caterpillar, the green chrysalis and the orange and black butterfly.

What colors is a monarch butterfly?

Orange, with black veins and black edges that hold small white spots. The easy Monarch uses orange and black only. The detailed Monarch leaves the white spots as empty squares inside the black.

Is a luna moth a butterfly?

No. It is a moth, one of the giant silk moths, with lime green wings, a white body and long tails on its hindwings. It is in this set because its wings color in like the butterflies'.

How do I print the four life cycle worksheets?

One at a time. Open More options, choose the Egg on a milkweed leaf under Pictures and press Print this sheet. Then do the same for the Monarch caterpillar, the Chrysalis and the Monarch.
