How this list was compiled: Words chosen and sorted into 5 lists for Homeroom Tools. The choice, the sorting and the sentences are ours; no published list, program or workbook was opened or copied. SOUND AND SPELLING: every word was looked up on 14 October 2026 in the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (https://www.ahdictionary.com/word/search.html?q= plus the word) for the sound of its ending and for a second spelling on the headword line, and each has an English entry in Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0). The dictionary writes the ending of all 20 words on Lists 1 and 2 as ärt; in the longer words of List 2 it carries a stress mark, the main one in apart, depart, impart, restart and outsmart. List 3 is spelled from the same dictionary's inflection lines (started, starting; darted; smarter, smartest), which keep one t; its lines for sit and admit double the t (sitting, admitted). On List 4 the same ärt sounds stand inside the word (party, pär-tē; apartment). On List 5 the letters art end words with other sounds: wart (wôrt), quart (kwôrt), thwart and athwart with the vowel of sort, and braggart (brăg-ərt) and stalwart (stôl-wərt) with a weak vowel and no stress mark. The meaning of hart, the two entries for tart, the ending -art (entered as a form of -ard), the word history of kindergarten and the pronunciations of heart, sweetheart, war, warm and quarter are from the same dictionary's entries; that a rhyme needs the same stressed vowel is from Wikipedia's Perfect and imperfect rhymes article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_and_imperfect_rhymes). A WORD FAMILY here is a set of words that share a rime, which Wikipedia's Phonics article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonics) gives as the vowel and the consonant sounds that follow it. SOUND-ALIKES: hart (heart): the dictionary gives both words one pronunciation, and Wiktionary lists heart as a homophone of hart. LEFT OUT: rampart (also said with a weak last vowel), flowchart (entered first as flow chart), cartwheel (also said with hw), and a few words by our choice for a list young children use. SENTENCES are ours, name no person, and none repeats a sentence in another list of this site (checked on 14 October 2026). Spellings are American. Licence: own work

Questions and answers

Do wart and quart rhyme with cart?

No. The American Heritage Dictionary writes wart (wôrt) and quart (kwôrt), with the vowel of sort, and cart (kärt), with the vowel of car. Thwart goes with wart, and so do war, warm and quarter.

Is heart an art word family word?

In sound, yes: the dictionary writes heart (härt), the same as hart. In spelling it ends in -eart, as sweetheart does, so neither word is on these lists.

Does braggart rhyme with art?

No. The dictionary writes braggart (brăg-ərt), with a weak vowel and no stress on the ending. It enters -art as a form of -ard, an ending for one who does a thing habitually or too much. Stalwart (stôl-wərt) has the same weak ending.

Can I print art word family worksheets?

Yes. Open List 1 for the ten one-syllable words, art to start, then print it as a Word list, a Test sheet, an ABC order sheet or a Missing letters sheet. The other four lists print in the same four forms.
