1 Step Equations Worksheet Maker for Grades 6 and 7

Print a new sheet of equations like 7x = 56, with a key that shows the undoing step.

20 problems. All four operations, whole numbers. Sheet A86ARS, with its answer key.

How it works

One move undoes each equation. Free sheets mix y + 2 = 11, n − 3 = 8, 10x = 70 and x/5 = 13; Sheet type adds 20 − x = 8, negatives, fractions, decimals and a check line.

Do the opposite to both sides

Addition is undone by subtraction and multiplication by division. For x + 8 = 21, take 8 from both sides: x = 13. For x/4 = 9, multiply both sides by 4: x = 36. The key prints that one line, 21 − 8 = 13, then the answer.

Which sheet to print first

Start with Addition equations: x + 8 = 21 and Subtraction equations: x − 6 = 14, the addition and subtraction one step equations worksheet pair. Then Multiply and divide mixed. Subtract the unknown: 20 − x = 8 comes last, because it breaks the do-the-opposite habit.

  • Ask for the check before the answer: 7 × 8 = 56 proves x = 8 in one line.
  • Common Core 6.EE.B.7 keeps grade 6 to x + p = q and px = q from 0 up; negatives are grade 7.

Questions and answers

Where is the adding and subtracting equations worksheet?

Choose Add and subtract, the letter anywhere in Sheet type. It mixes 18 + x = 30, 20 = n − 10 and y − 36 = 12, so the letter is not always first and some answers sit on the left.

Why is 20 − x = 8 not solved by adding 8?

The x is being taken away, so adding 8 gives 28, and 20 − 28 is not 8. Ask what comes off 20 to leave 8: x = 20 − 8 = 12. Check: 20 − 12 = 8.

Can I save a one step equations worksheet as a PDF?

Yes. Press Print and pick Save as PDF in your browser's print window. The answer key prints on its own page after the sheet, so leave it out by unticking Answer key first.

All 12 sheet types

Whole numbers 8

  • Add and subtract, the letter anywhere 18 + x = 30, 20 = n − 10 and y − 36 = 12: the letter moves, and one equation in four starts with its answer side.
  • Addition equations: x + 8 = 21 x + 8 = 21 is undone by taking 8 away: x = 13. Numbers to 50.
  • All four operations, whole numbers y + 2 = 11, n − 3 = 8, 10x = 70 and x/5 = 13 shuffled on one sheet. The key writes the undoing step: 11 − 2 = 9.
  • Division equations: x/4 = 9 x/4 = 9 is undone by multiplying by 4: x = 36. Divisors from 2 to 12.
  • Multiplication equations: 7x = 56 7x = 56 is undone by dividing by 7: x = 8. Factors from 2 to 12.
  • Multiply and divide mixed 12y = 144 and n/5 = 8 on one sheet, so each problem needs a look at the sign first.
  • Subtract the unknown: 20 − x = 8 20 − x = 8 is solved by 20 − 8 = 12, not by adding 8. Pupils who add get 28.
  • Subtraction equations: x − 6 = 14 x − 6 = 14 is undone by adding 6: x = 20. Numbers to 50.

Negatives, fractions and decimals 3

  • Decimal equations: x + 2.5 = 7.1 x + 2.5 = 7.1 gives x = 4.6, and 1.5x = 6 gives x = 4. Tenths and hundredths.
  • Fraction equations: x + 1/2 = 5/2 x + 1/2 = 5/2 gives x = 2, and 3/4x = 6 gives x = 8. Halves to tenths.
  • Negative numbers: x + 7 = −5 x + 7 = −5 gives x = −12, and −4x = 28 gives x = −7. Numbers from −12 to 12.

Solve and check 1

  • Solve, then check by substituting Under 6x = 114 is a work line and a Check line: 6 × 19 = 114. The key fills both.
