Four sets follow the four points the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts list under grade 8 grammar and usage (L.8.1a verbals, L.8.1b active and passive voice, L.8.1c verb mood, L.8.1d shifts in voice and mood), read on 2026-10-02 in the standards document published at thecorestandards.org; the fifth set, confused pairs, is our own addition. In the mood set the answer is the formal choice (If I were, I insist that he be). Five sets under Set

Gerund, participle, infinitive: the word in brackets. Active or passive. Verb mood: If I ___ you takes were; I insist that he ___ on time takes be; then name a sentence as indicative, imperative or interrogative. Shifts in voice and mood: shift or no shift. Affect, effect and other pairs.

What is not on the sheets

There are no reading passages. A set on the comma, dash and ellipsis for a pause is left out, because more than one mark can be right there.

  • The mood set follows formal usage: If I were, not If I was.
