Accents do not count: café may be typed as cafe, and the marks show how it is written.

Only voices built into this device are used, so the words are not sent to a speech service to be read. With no voice, a person reads the words from the last page of the test sheet.

What each round tests

The warm-up crosses a map and a timeline: meridian, atoll, citadel, patrician. Round 2 is earth science (aquifer, caldera, solstice) and Round 3 pre-algebra and statistics (commutative, quartile, correlation). Round 4 names grammar and writing terms: gerund, appositive, ellipsis. In the final round five words are French (cachet, corsage) and five trace to Greek (eulogy, enigma).

Beside the junior high bee

Our junior high bee mixes grades 7 and 8 and draws on US history, life and physical science, algebra and literature. This page is grade 7 alone, from other subjects, and the two share no word, so a class can run both.

  • In chivalry and cachet, ch is said as sh, a sign of French.
  • Parenthesis and ellipsis end in is; their plurals end in es.

Questions and answers

What words are in a 7th grade spelling bee?

Each contest sets its own list. These 50 are our own practice words drawn from grade 7 classes, such as topography, seismograph, exponential and interrogative; no contest's list was opened. Edit this list swaps in the words your school sends home.

Which round is the hardest?

Round 3 has the most double letters: commutative, associative and approximation each double a consonant, and correlation doubles its r. The final round's words are shorter but less regular: cachet ends in a silent t.

Does it repeat the 7th grade spelling list?

No. Accommodate and rhythm stay on our grade 7 weekly lists. No word here is on those lists, the junior high bee or any other bee on this site, so the 50 are extra practice.
