The snow is the paper

The easy Snowman has 65 blue sky squares and the easy Igloo 51, and the bottom row of snowy ground stays white on both. The Penguin works the other way: 42 black squares close around a white belly. The Snowflake is drawn in blue and purple, because a white one would not show.

Count the blue and light blue crayons

Blue is in the key of 7 of the 8 easy grids, all but the Penguin. Every detailed grid needs light blue, and two skies use a lot: 219 squares on the Snowman and 221 on the Sled. The detailed Igloo has a night sky of 225 plain blue squares.

  • The Snowflake mirrors left to right and top to bottom: ask pupils to find both lines of symmetry.
  • A real snowflake starts as a tiny hexagon and grows an arm from each corner, so ours has 6.
  • Penguins live almost entirely in the Southern Hemisphere and igloos were built in the Arctic, so ours would never meet.

Questions and answers

How do you color a white snowman on white paper?

You color everything else. The sky is blue on the easy grid and light blue on the detailed one, so the squares left empty form the body. To mark them, tick Put 0 in the white squares in More options and each prints a 0.

Which winter picture is quickest, and which takes longest?

On the easy grids the Snowflake and the Penguin are quickest at 60 squares each, and the Sled is longest at 105. On the detailed grids the Igloo is longest at 443 squares. The detailed Penguin has the most colors, 8, in 274 squares.

Are these Christmas pictures?

No. Nothing here shows a gift, an ornament or any holiday, so the set lasts from the first frost to the last. For a Christmas sheet, make a Christmas word search.

Does the answer key print too?

Yes, in color on page 2. Untick Answer key on page 2 under More options to leave it out of a class set. The worksheet itself is one page of Letter or A4.
