Math Operations 20

Addend Any number that is added to another. In 3 + 4 = 7, the 3 and the 4.
Addition Putting two or more numbers together to find how many in all.
Array Objects set out in equal rows and columns, often used to show multiplying.
Difference The answer when you subtract. In 9 - 4 = 5, it is the 5.
Dividend The number being divided. In 20 ÷ 5 = 4, it is the 20.
Division Splitting a number into equal groups or equal shares.
Divisor The number you divide by. In 20 ÷ 5 = 4, it is the 5.
Equal Worth the same amount. Robert Recorde first used the = sign in 1557.
Equation A number sentence with an = sign, saying both sides are worth the same.
Factor A number you multiply by another. In 3 × 4 = 12, the 3 and the 4.
Minus The name of the take-away sign. It is Latin for less.
Multiply To add the same number again and again in one step: 3 × 4 is 4 + 4 + 4.
Plus The name of the + sign. It is Latin for more.
Product The answer when you multiply. In 3 × 4 = 12, it is the 12.
Quotient The answer when you divide. The name is Latin for how many times.
Regroup To trade 10 ones for 1 ten, or back again, when you add or subtract.
Remainder What is left over after dividing. 10 ÷ 3 is 3 with 1 left over.
Subtraction Taking one number away from another to find what is left.
Sum The answer when you add. In 3 + 4 = 7, it is the 7.
Times The word you say when you read the × sign aloud.

Numbers and Place Value 23

Abacus A frame of sliding beads for counting and adding, used since ancient times.
Compare To decide which of two numbers is greater, or whether they match.
Composite A whole number above 1 that is not prime, such as 4, 6, 8 or 9.
Count To say numbers in order to find how many there are.
Digit Any of the symbols 0 to 9. The name is Latin for finger.
Dozen A group of 12, the way eggs are often sold.
Estimate A careful guess at an amount, made without working it out exactly.
Even Able to be split into 2 equal whole groups, like 2, 4, 6 and 8.
Hundred Ten tens. It is written as a 1 followed by 2 zeros.
Less Not as much or not as many: the opposite of more.
Million A thousand thousands. It is written as a 1 followed by 6 zeros.
Multiple What you get by multiplying a number by 1, 2, 3 and so on: 5, 10, 15.
Number A word or symbol that tells how many or how much.
Numeral A written symbol for a number, such as 7 or the Roman VII.
Odd Not able to be split into 2 equal whole groups, like 1, 3, 5 and 7.
Order To line numbers up from least to greatest, or the other way.
Pair Two things that go together, like socks or shoes.
Pattern Numbers or shapes that follow a rule, such as 2, 4, 6, 8.
Place value What a digit is worth because of where it sits, such as the 4 in 40.
Prime A whole number above 1 that only 1 and itself divide evenly: 2, 3, 5, 7.
Round To swap a number for a nearby easier one, such as 48 for 50.
Thousand Ten hundreds. It is written as a 1 followed by 3 zeros.
Zero The number for none at all. The name comes from an Arabic word for empty.

Fractions and Decimals 18

Decimal A number with a point in it, such as 0.5, built on tenths and hundredths.
Denominator The bottom number of a fraction. It tells how many equal parts make the whole.
Eighth One of 8 equal parts. Cut a half in two, then in two again.
Equivalent Worth the same though written differently, as 2/4 and 1/2 are.
Fourth One of 4 equal parts of a whole. Another name for it is a quarter.
Fraction A number for part of a whole, like 3/4. The name is Latin for broken.
Half One of 2 equal parts of a whole.
Hundredth One of 100 equal parts. One cent is this much of a dollar.
Improper Describes a fraction whose top is as big as its bottom or bigger, like 7/4.
Mixed number A whole amount and a fraction written together, such as 2 1/2.
Numerator The top number of a fraction. It tells how many equal parts you have.
Percent Parts out of 100. The name is Latin for by the hundred.
Quarter One of 4 equal parts. Also the United States coin worth 25 cents.
Reciprocal A fraction flipped over: 3/4 becomes 4/3. The two multiply to make 1.
Simplify To rewrite a fraction with the smallest numbers you can: 6/8 becomes 3/4.
Tenth One of 10 equal parts. It is the first place after the decimal point.
Third One of 3 equal parts of a whole.
Whole All of something, with no part missing. Four fourths make one.

Measurement 21

Angle The opening between two lines that meet at a point, measured in degrees.
Area The amount of flat space inside a shape, counted in square units.
Capacity How much a container can hold, such as 2 cups or 1 liter.
Centimeter One hundredth of a meter. An inch is exactly 2.54 of them.
Degree A unit for angles and for temperature. A full turn has 360 of them.
Height How tall something is from bottom to top.
Kilogram A metric unit of mass equal to 1,000 grams, or about 2.2 pounds.
Kilometer A metric unit of distance equal to 1,000 meters.
Length How long something is from end to end.
Liter A metric unit for liquids. One of these of water has a mass close to 1 kilogram.
Mass The amount of matter in an object, given in grams and kilograms.
Measure To find the size or amount of something using units.
Metric The measuring system built on tens, with meters, liters and grams.
Perimeter The distance around a shape. The name is Greek for measure around.
Ruler A straight strip marked in inches or centimeters for finding length.
Scale A tool that shows how heavy something is. Also the numbers along a graph.
Temperature How hot or cold something is. Water freezes at 32 °F, which is 0 °C.
Thermometer The tool that shows how hot or cold something is.
Volume The amount of space a solid shape takes up, counted in cubic units.
Weight How heavy something is, given in pounds or ounces.
Width How far something goes from side to side.

Customary Units 16

Acre A unit of land area equal to 43,560 square feet.
Cup A kitchen measure equal to 8 fluid ounces. 2 of them make 1 pint.
Customary The name for the United States system of inches, pounds and gallons.
Fahrenheit The temperature scale on which water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212.
Foot A length unit of 12 inches. 3 of them make 1 yard.
Gallon A liquid measure equal to 4 quarts, which is 8 pints or 16 cups.
Inch A small unit of length. 12 of them make 1 foot.
Mile A long unit of distance equal to 5,280 feet, or 1,760 yards.
Ounce A small unit of weight. 16 of them make 1 pound.
Pint A liquid measure equal to 2 cups. 2 of them make 1 quart.
Pound A unit of weight equal to 16 ounces.
Quart A liquid measure equal to 2 pints. 4 of them make 1 gallon.
Tablespoon A kitchen measure equal to 3 teaspoons. 2 of them make 1 fluid ounce.
Teaspoon A small kitchen measure. 3 of them make 1 tablespoon.
Ton A very heavy unit of weight. In the United States it is 2,000 pounds.
Yard A length unit of 3 feet, or 36 inches.

Time and Money 21

Budget A plan for how much money to spend and how much to save.
Calendar A chart of the days, weeks and months of a year.
Cent One hundredth of a dollar. The name comes from the Latin for hundred.
Change The money you get back when you pay more than the price.
Clock It shows the time. Its short hand points to the hour and its long hand to the minute.
Coin A small round piece of metal money.
Decade A span of 10 years.
Dime The United States coin worth 10 cents. 10 of them make 1 dollar.
Dollar The main unit of money in the United States, worth 100 cents.
Hour 60 minutes. A full day has 24 of them.
Midnight 12 o'clock at night, when a new day begins.
Minute 60 seconds. Counting time in sixties goes back to ancient Sumer.
Month One of the 12 parts of a year. Each has 28 to 31 days.
Nickel The United States coin worth 5 cents.
Noon 12 o'clock in the middle of the day. The letters a.m. mean before it and p.m. after it.
Penny The United States coin worth 1 cent.
Price The amount of money you must pay to buy something.
Second A very short unit of time. 60 of them make 1 minute.
Total The full amount when everything is added up.
Week A run of 7 days. A year has 52 of them plus 1 or 2 days.
Year 12 months, or 365 days. A leap one has 366.

Data and Graphs 23

Average One typical number used to stand for a whole set of numbers.
Axis One of the two number lines along the side and bottom of a graph.
Certain Sure to happen, every single time.
Chance The possibility that something will happen.
Chart Information set out as a picture or grid so it is easy to read.
Data Facts or numbers collected to answer a question.
Frequency How many times a value or an answer shows up in the results.
Graph A picture that shows numbers with bars, lines, dots or symbols.
Histogram A graph whose touching bars show how many values fall in each interval.
Impossible Not able to happen at all, like rolling a 7 on one number cube.
Key The part of a graph or map that tells what each symbol stands for.
Label The words on a graph that say what each bar or line stands for.
Likely Expected to happen more often than not.
Mean The sum of a set of numbers divided by how many there are.
Median The middle value when a set of numbers is put in order.
Mode The value that appears most often in a set of numbers.
Outlier A value that sits far away from the rest of the set.
Predict To say what you think will happen, using what you already know.
Probability How likely something is, as a number from 0 to 1. A fair coin gives 1/2 for heads.
Range The greatest value in a set minus the least value.
Survey A set of questions asked of many people to collect information.
Table Information set out in rows and columns.
Tally A quick count kept with marks, bundled in groups of 5.

Circle A round flat figure. Every point on it is the same distance from the center.
Cone A solid with a flat round base that narrows to a point.
Cube A solid with 6 square faces, 12 edges and 8 corners.
Cylinder A solid with 2 matching round ends and a curved side, like a can.
Hexagon A flat figure with 6 straight sides, like a cell in a honeycomb.
Octagon A flat figure with 8 straight sides, like a stop sign.
Oval A closed curve like the outline of an egg. The name comes from the Latin for egg.
Pentagon A flat figure with 5 straight sides.
Polygon Any flat closed figure with straight sides. The name is Greek for many angles.
Prism A solid with 2 matching flat ends joined by flat sides, like a box.
Pyramid A solid with a flat base and triangle sides that meet at one point.
Rectangle A flat figure with 4 right angles. Its opposite sides match in length.
Shape The form of a flat or solid figure.
Sphere A perfectly round solid, like a ball.
Square A flat figure with 4 equal sides and 4 right angles.
Symmetry When one half of a figure is the mirror image of the other half.
Triangle A flat figure with 3 straight sides and 3 corners.
Vertex A corner, where two sides or edges meet.

Middle School Math 24

Absolute value How far a number is from 0 on the number line. For -5 it is 5.
Circumference The distance around a circle: the perimeter of a round shape.
Coefficient The number multiplied by a letter. In 3x it is the 3.
Coordinate One of the two numbers that pin a point on a grid. Descartes published the idea in 1637.
Diameter A straight line across a circle through its center. It is 2 times the radius.
Discount An amount taken off the usual price, often given as a percent.
Distributive The property that says 3 × (4 + 5) is the same as 3 × 4 + 3 × 5.
Exponent The small raised number that tells how many times to use the base as a factor.
Expression Numbers, letters and operation signs with no = sign, such as 3x + 2.
Inequality A number sentence that uses a sign such as < or > in place of =.
Integer A whole number, its negative, or zero. The name is Latin for whole.
Interest Money paid for the use of borrowed or saved money, set as a yearly percent.
Negative Less than zero. It sits to the left of 0 on a number line.
Opposite The number the same distance from 0 on the other side, as -5 is to 5.
Ordered pair Two numbers in parentheses, like (3, 5), that give a point: across first, then up.
Origin The point (0, 0), where the x and y lines cross.
Positive Greater than zero. It sits to the right of 0 on a number line.
Proportion A statement that two ratios are worth the same, such as 1/2 = 4/8.
Quadrant One of the 4 sections that the x and y lines cut a grid into.
Radius How far it is from the middle of a circle to its edge.
Rate A comparison of two different units, such as miles per hour.
Ratio A comparison of two amounts, such as 2 cups of flour to 1 of sugar.
Square root The number that, multiplied by itself, gives the starting number. For 49 it is 7.
Variable A letter that stands for a number you do not know yet, like x.
