How this list was compiled: 60 clues written for this site for children aged 8 to 12, in two sets: everyday things, and riddles. No animal is an answer, and no answer repeats the 2nd grade bank. The age bands are our suggestion. The riddles are in our own words; a few follow the shape of old folk riddles. No clue was copied from a published puzzle. Licence: own work

How it works

These printable kids crossword puzzles have two sets: everyday things for ages 8 to 9, and riddles for ages 10 to 12, such as The more you take, the more you leave behind. They are vocabulary crosswords.

Two sets

Everyday Things has Doorbell, Faucet, Stapler and Elevator, each clued by what it does. Riddles has Footsteps, Towel, Silence and Tomorrow, each clued by a riddle in our own words.

For younger or older children

For ages 6 to 7, use the 2nd grade crossword or the sight word crossword. For animals, try the animal crossword. The age bands are our suggestion.

  • Riddles are harder than they look: tick Word bank under the clues in More options for a first try.

Questions and answers

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Every print ends with the answer key on a sheet of its own, and Show all clues and answers, under the puzzle, lists all 60 clues with their answers.

Can kids solve these crosswords on a tablet?

Yes. Tap a square and type; Check word and Reveal letter help when a child is stuck. Letters typed stay in that browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Are there crosswords about holidays for kids?

Yes, on their own pages: the Halloween crossword, the Thanksgiving crossword and the Christmas crossword each open on words a child can read.
