How it works
This New Year's resolution worksheet has three rows, one for each goal. Beside each goal a student writes the first step and who can help, and the line at the foot takes a date to look at the sheet again.

Sheets by grade
The worksheet for 1st and 2nd grade asks for one resolution: a box to draw it, then primary lines for This year I will and I will start by. The worksheet for 4th and 5th grade works one resolution out in full: why it matters, three steps in order, who can help and how the student will know it is done.
Other ways to set goals
One sheet gives a box each to a goal at school, a goal at home and a way to help someone else. Look back and look ahead starts from last year, with what the student was proud of and what was hard. Two to a page prints the three goals twice with a cut line between.
Questions and answers
What is a New Year's resolution?
A promise a person makes at the start of a year to keep up a good habit, change something or reach a goal.
What are good New Year's resolutions for students?
Ones a student can do alone and check: read before bed each night (not just read more), raise a hand once in every class, learn the times tables, keep a tidy desk, ask someone new to play at recess.
How do you help a child keep a New Year's resolution?
Make the first step small enough to do this week, name a helper, and set a date to look again. The check-in sheet has a row for each month from January to June: how it is going, and the next step.
