How it works
These January word puzzles are word scrambles for the first weeks back: New Year words such as Countdown and Confetti beside cold-day words such as Parka, Slush and Cocoa. The answer key prints on its own page.

New Year first, then snow
The easy list is short: Wish, Year, Ski, Slush. Medium, the opening sheet, mixes Calendar and Confetti with Fleece and Ice rink. The hard list holds Resolution, Noisemaker and Windchill, up to 11 letters.
The first morning back
Hand out a sheet while the class settles after the break, then ask each pupil to write one resolution using a word from it. For the whole room at once, Play shows one scramble at a time on the board.
- Ice rink is two words: the answer line keeps the space, so tell younger pupils to look for a short word and a long one.
Questions and answers
How are these different from the winter word puzzles?
The winter word puzzles hold season words such as Blizzard, Igloo and Mitten. This page adds the New Year and shares no word with it, so a class can do both in the same month.
What age are these January word puzzles for?
The easy list suits kindergarten and grade 1 with hints on, medium suits grades 2 and 3, and the hard list of 9- to 11-letter words suits grade 4 and up.
Can a word unscramble two ways?
Not on these lists. Every word was checked against a dictionary for anagrams, and words such as Skate (steak) and Cold (clod) were left out.
