Print the 12 months
The opening sheet runs to 2 pages on Letter or A4. The other 6 layouts use the same list: Missing letters, Word shapes, Unscramble, ABC order, Write a sentence and Sort by list. Each one with something to check adds its answer key as the last pages.
Keep it to 1 page
In the Word list menu pick January to June or July to December. Six months fit on 1 page in every layout, and so does their answer key.
Sort the months by season
Pick Winter months, then Sort by list. Pupils get a word box of 9 months and 3 columns to write them in: winter, spring and summer. Pick Spring months for spring, summer and fall.
- Missing letters leaves out the letters pupils drop: the first r of February, both u's of August, the c of December.
- Unscramble prints its letters in lower case. The word box above them shows each month with its capital.
- For a row to write each month without help, open More options and tick Add an empty row. The 12 months then take 3 pages.
Questions and answers
How do you spell February?
F, e, b, r, u, a, r, y. An r comes straight after the b. Some people say the word without that r, which is why it gets left out on paper. The Missing letters sheet prints Feb_uary, so pupils write the r in themselves.
Do the months of the year need a capital letter?
Yes. In English every month starts with a capital wherever it stands in a sentence, and so do the short forms Jan to Dec. The seasons do not: winter, spring, summer and fall stay in lower case.
Which months are in each season?
North of the equator, counting whole months: winter is December, January and February; spring is March, April and May; summer is June, July and August; fall is September, October and November. South of the equator the seasons are the other way round.
Why is September the ninth month if its name means seventh?
The early Roman year began in March, so September was month 7, October month 8, November month 9 and December month 10. The year later came to start in January, and the four names stayed as they were.
