How it works

Pick a century, or painters only

Start from a list offers nine themed lists. Four follow the timeline, from Renaissance Artists to Artists of the 1900s. Famous Painters drops the sculptors and printmakers for a famous painters word search of 39 names, Botticelli to Pollock. Sculptors, Women Artists, American Artists and Artists Around the World cut across the centuries.

What a clue says

Each clue states a fact, never an opinion of the art: a nationality and a craft, then a work, a place or a date. "Dutch printmaker of impossible staircases, as in Relativity" hides Escher.

  • Tick Show clues, not words, for an art history quiz: "Japanese printmaker of The Great Wave off Kanagawa" hides Hokusai.
  • For grades 2 and 3, pick Short Artist Names (26, such as Klee and Kahlo), then Large print under More options.
  • Names with a space, accent or apostrophe hide as plain capitals: Van Gogh is VANGOGH, Cézanne is CEZANNE. The printed list keeps the true spelling.

Questions and answers

Why is Leonardo not listed as Da Vinci?

Da Vinci means from Vinci, the town near Florence where Leonardo was born, so it is not a family name. Museums use Leonardo, as this list does. Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian and Rembrandt also go by a given name, and Tintoretto by a nickname.

Which artists are listed, and how were they checked?

The 139 names run from Masaccio, who died in 1428, to Jacob Lawrence, who died in 2000, so none is living. Twenty-two are women, and 18 worked outside Europe and the United States. Each clue was checked against the artist's Wikipedia article in September 2026.

Which women artists are on the list?

Twenty-two, from Anguissola, who served at the court of Spain, to Varo. Leyster's clue: "For years her pictures were credited to Frans Hals." Moses "took up painting in earnest at age 78", and Hepworth's Single Form stands at the United Nations in New York.
