Three lists of Halloween words
The easy list is sounds and small things of the night: Hoot, Howl, Fog, Web. Medium, the opening sheet, holds Wizard, Cackle and Hayride. The hard list has 8 to 11 letters, such as Masquerade and Candlelight.
For a party table
Print one sheet per table and race: the first table with every word right wins. With Play, the whole room solves one scramble at a time on the board, which suits a party better than silent work.
- The lists leave out gore; Tombstone and Graveyard are the darkest words, both on the hard list.
- Switch on the word bank for younger classes: they match the jumble to a word instead of spelling from nothing.
Questions and answers
What age are these Halloween word puzzles for?
Kindergarten and first grade can do the easy list of 3- and 4-letter words with clues. Grades 2 and 3 fit the medium list, and grades 4 and up the hard list.
Are the words too scary for young children?
They are mild: owls, fog, candy, wizards, masks and bonfires. The hard list adds Skeleton, Tombstone and Graveyard, which you can skip by printing the easy or medium list.
Does each scramble have just one answer?
Yes. Words that make another word, such as bat (tab), owl (low) and potion (option), were left off after a dictionary check, so the key never disagrees with a sharp pupil.
