Questions and answers

What are the types of chemical reactions?

Four basic types: synthesis, where simple substances combine; decomposition, where a complex substance breaks down; single displacement, where one element replaces another in a compound; and double displacement, where the ions of two compounds switch places.

What are the signs of a chemical reaction?

Look for an odor, a change of color or a gas being given off; many chemical changes also cannot simply be undone. Each of those signs can also come from a physical change, so none is proof alone.

What is the difference between exothermic and endothermic reactions?

An exothermic reaction usually releases stored energy as heat; combustion is one. An endothermic process absorbs heat from its surroundings; thermal decomposition is one.

What does a catalyst do in a chemical reaction?

It increases the rate of the reaction by providing a pathway with a lower activation energy, and it is not consumed. An enzyme is a biological catalyst. An inhibitor does the opposite.

Does the chemical reactions word search print with a key?

Yes, on two pages of Letter or A4: the puzzle, then the same grid with every word ringed. Tick Show clues, not words and Yield becomes "The amount of product obtained in a chemical reaction."
