How this list was compiled: Chosen and written for this site on 2026-09-30. Each root's language and meaning, and both example words after it, were checked that day in the Online Etymology Dictionary (https://www.etymonline.com/): the entry of every example word, or the entry of the word-forming element it points to (tele-, photo-, micro-, chrono-, hydro-, -phobia, poly-, mono-, zoo-, mega-, pyro-, mal-), names the Greek or Latin word and gives this meaning. Where a source word has several senses (Greek megas: great, large; Greek psykhe: soul, mind; Latin bene: well) one is printed. No published root list or programme was copied, and no grade is claimed for the list. Licence: own work

How it works

This root words worksheet prints twelve roots down the left and their meanings, mixed up, down the right, to join with a line. There are 60 roots in five sets, two Greek and three Latin.

Latin Greek root words worksheet, five sets

Set picks the twelve: Greek roots 1 (bio, geo, tele), Greek roots 2 (astr, phob, poly), Latin roots 1 (port, rupt, spect), Latin roots 2 (vert, mort, bene) or Latin roots 3 (sol, lun, nov). All of them draws twelve from the whole 60.

Pencil, or scissors and glue

Answer by has Pencil only, with lines to draw, and Cut and paste, which prints fewer roots, with the meanings as tiles to cut out and paste beside them.

Your own roots

Type pairs in the box, one per line, with an equals sign: aqua = water. What you type replaces the sample, so the same sheet serves prefixes, suffixes or this week's list.

  • Every root is listed under the tool with its language and example words, such as tele: far (Greek): telescope, telegraph.

Questions and answers

What are Greek and Latin roots?

Word parts that carry one meaning into many English words. Tele is Greek for far and turns up in telescope and telegraph. Port is Latin for carry, as in transport and portable. Knowing the root gives a clue to a new word.

Which grades learn Greek and Latin roots?

The Common Core language standards name them in grades 4 and 5: students use common Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word. The standards give telegraph, photograph and autograph as examples.

Is there a greek latin roots worksheet with an answer key?

Yes. Under More options, press See the answers to look at the key on screen. It also prints as the last page unless you untick Add an answer key as the last page. The key is made from the same twelve pairs.

Why is aqua not on the list?

A matching sheet needs one meaning per root. Hydr already means water, so aqua is left out, and so are scrib, vis and terr, whose meanings belong here to graph, spect and geo. Type them in the box to add them.
