How it works
These 4th grade crossword puzzles, printable on Letter or A4, are vocabulary crosswords in a criss-cross grid. The page opens on 12 words of 5 or 6 letters, such as Answer, Prime and Delta, with no word bank.

Synonym and antonym clues come first
Every Synonyms clue reads "Another word for": very old is Ancient, hide is Conceal. Every Antonyms clue reads "Opposite of": question is Answer, temporary is Permanent. Math, science, and geography and history words have a set each, and Shorter Words gathers the 61 answers of 5 or 6 letters for a gentler start.
A step up from third grade
Answers run from 5 to 10 letters, up to Camouflage and Population, and none repeats the 3rd grade page. Factual clues were checked: hurricane winds start at 74 miles per hour, and a gallon holds 4 quarts. Press Add another clue for a longer puzzle, or the cross beside a clue for a shorter one. Press New puzzle for other words from the same set.
- Use a Synonyms puzzle before a revising lesson: each answer is a stronger word to swap into a draft, as Enormous is for huge.
- For pupils who need support, or for an 18-word puzzle, open More options and tick Word bank under the clues.
- Pair a Geography and History Words puzzle with a wall map: partners point to a delta, a peninsula and a plateau before they write.
Questions and answers
Are grade 4 and 4th grade crossword puzzles printable from the same page?
Yes. Grade 4 and 4th grade are the same school year, ages 9 to 10. Spellings here are American, such as Harbor, so a class elsewhere may want to read the full list under the puzzle first.
How hard are the words?
A step above the 3rd grade page. Shorter Words keeps to 5 or 6 letters, such as Rapid, Error and Canal. The subject sets reach words like Symmetry, Herbivore and Longitude. Open "Show all clues and answers" to preview every word before you print.
Can the class solve the same puzzle on tablets?
Yes. Tap a square and type. Every tablet opens on the same first puzzle. Typed letters stay in this browser. On paper the squares are never under 8 mm, and the answer key prints last.
