Questions and answers
What animals are vertebrates?
Every animal with a backbone and a skull: the fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, some 65,000 species in all. The backbone surrounds and protects the spinal cord, and the skull protects the brain.
Which vertebrates are warm-blooded?
Birds and mammals, which keep a stable body temperature. Most fish are cold-blooded, as amphibians and reptiles are, though a few large, active swimmers such as the white shark and tuna hold a higher core temperature.
What is the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates?
A vertebrate has a vertebral column; an invertebrate neither develops nor keeps one. Vertebrates are the minority: under five percent of the animal species so far described.
Do all vertebrates have bones?
No. The skeleton of a shark or a ray is made mostly of cartilage, and the hagfish has a skull but only rudimentary vertebrae.
Is there a printable vertebrates word search with an answer key?
Yes. It is a two-page printable on Letter or A4, and the second page is the answer key with each word ringed. With Show clues, not words ticked, Gills prints as "Organs that take dissolved oxygen out of water."
