Multiples of 10 × 1-digit40 × 7 is the fact 4 × 7 = 28 with a zero after it: 280. Common Core places this step in grade 3 (3.NBT.3), a year before the other sheets here, so it makes a fair warm-up.
No regrouping, answers under 10032 × 3 = 96. Both digit products stay under 10 (2 × 3 = 6 and 3 × 3 = 9), so each is written straight down.
With regrouping 2
Any 2-digit × 1-digit47 × 6 = 282. The page opens on this sheet: 20 stacked problems drawn from every top number from 11 to 99 and every multiplier from 2 to 9.
Multipliers 6 to 9 only78 × 9 = 702. 8 × 9 = 72, write 2 and carry 7. 7 × 9 = 63, plus 7, is 70. Every line leans on the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables, so this sheet shows at once which facts are still shaky.
Special numbers 1
Teen numbers × 1-digit16 × 7 = 112, because 10 × 7 = 70 and 6 × 7 = 42. Top numbers from 11 to 19 only: the step just past the 12 times table, and handy when a pupil knows the facts but is new to columns.
Other layouts 1
Written across for mental math24 × 3 = ___ on one line, 30 to a page, with no space for working. Pupils multiply the tens, then the ones, and add: 60 + 12 = 72. Top numbers stay under 50 to keep it mental.
How it works
Make 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication worksheets that match where your pupils are with regrouping, from nothing to carry (32 × 3) up to 78 × 9. Problems are stacked in columns with room for the carried digit.

What regrouping changes
Take the 648 problems from 11 × 2 to 99 × 9 whose top number does not end in zero. Only 126 have no carry from the ones, so a random sheet is mostly regrouping. The carry stays inside the tens (27 × 3 = 81), goes into the hundreds (86 × 7 = 602), or makes a new hundred (38 × 3 = 114).
Grade 3 or grade 4
Of all multiplication worksheets, 2 digit by 1 digit is the size whose grade depends on where you teach. Texas 3.4(G) puts it in grade 3. Common Core waits until grade 4 (4.NBT.5). England expects a formal written layout in Year 4.
Estimate before a quiz: 47 × 6 is close to 50 × 6 = 300, so an answer of 2,442 is plainly wrong.
A top number ending in 9 has a shortcut: 49 × 7 is 50 × 7 less 7, which is 343.
Questions and answers
Is there a 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication worksheets PDF?
There is no fixed file, because every sheet is made fresh. Press Print and choose Save as PDF, and the problems come out first with the answer key after them.
What does 2x1 or 2 by 1 mean on a worksheet?
It counts digits. A 2x1 multiplication worksheet has a 2-digit number on top and a 1-digit multiplier below, as in 47 × 6. It is written as a 2 by 1 multiplication worksheet. The next sizes up are 3 by 1 and 2 by 2.
What mistakes show up on a two digit by one digit multiplication worksheet?
Three slips, shown on 47 × 6 = 282. Forgetting the carried 4 gives 242. Adding the 4 to the tens before multiplying, so 8 × 6 = 48, gives 482. Writing 42 whole in the ones place gives 2,442.
