Easy and hard lists for Spanish class

Beginners pick Easy Spanish Christmas, the 35 words of 3 to 5 letters (Vela, Reno, Uvas), with Large print from More options. Hard Spanish Christmas has 32 words of 8 to 11 letters, Champurrado and Felicidades among them: press Hard and set 20 by 20. Accents stay in the word list and drop out of the grid, so Árbol is hidden as ARBOL.

Three customs the lists cover

Las Posadas and Carols follows Mexico's nine nights of processions, December 16 to 24, where children break a piñata. Spanish New Year and Three Kings holds Uvas, the twelve grapes Spain eats at midnight on December 31, and Zapatos, the shoes children leave out on January 5 for the kings' gifts.

  • In More options, set Word list to Show clues, not words: "midnight: la ___" is then the only hint for Medianoche.
  • The printed list has a ruled line beside each word, where pupils write the English meaning as they find it.
  • Fast finishers copy the first twelve unused squares, row by row, into the blanks. The answer key prints the message.

Questions and answers

Does the Spanish Christmas word search print with an answer key?

Print makes the puzzle sheet, with a Name and Date line and a ruled line beside each word, then the answer key on its own page with every word ringed. Save as PDF in the print window keeps a file.

How do Ñ and the accents appear in the grid?

Ñ is a letter of its own: Piñata is hidden with its Ñ, and the filler letters include Ñ too. Accents and the dieresis drop out of the grid only: Belén is hidden as BELEN and Güiro as GUIRO. The word list keeps both marks.

What does Feliz Navidad mean?

Merry Christmas: feliz is happy or merry, and Navidad is Christmas. It is the hidden message here: once the words are found, the first twelve unused squares, read row by row, spell it.

Which countries do the Christmas words come from?

Mostly Spain and Mexico, with Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba and Puerto Rico in the food and carol lists. Names change by country: a nativity scene is a belén, a pesebre or a nacimiento, and the Three Kings cake is roscón in Spain, rosca in Mexico.
