Jumps of 8 from 0 to 120

Skip counting by 8: 1 to 120. 3 blanks to fill in, in the counting strip.

How it works

This skip counting by 8 chart lights the 15 stops from 8 to 120. Each jump has a note of its own in the list further down, from a spider's legs at 8 to a piano's keys at 88.

The pattern inside the 8s

The ones digits fall by 2 on every jump: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0. After 5 jumps the count has grown by 40 and the endings start again, at 48 and at 88. Watch 40 to 48 and 80 to 88, where the tens digit stays put. Each stop sits one row down and two squares left of the last, except onto 40, 80 and 120.

Fill the gaps

Each of the 15 jumps leaves one lit square and lands on the next: 40 + 8 = 48 stays in the 40s. Type the strip's 3 or 4 missing numbers and press Check. New counting strip deals a different stretch.

  • Skip counting 8 at a time is two jumps of 4: whisper the 4s, say every second one aloud.
  • Stuck on the next number? Add 10, then take 2 away: 56, 66, 64.

Questions and answers

What are the numbers when skip counting by 8s?

8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96, 104, 112 and 120: 15 stops. On the 1 to 100 chart the last one is 96, the twelfth, and 104 falls off the end.

Is skip counting by eights the same as the 8 times table?

The numbers match, but the job differs. Skip counting says the whole count in order until each next number comes unprompted. The times table asks for one fact alone, such as 7 × 8: see the 8 times table chart.

How do I teach with the 8 skip counting chart?

Show it on the board and tap each lit square as the class counts aloud. Count the legs on 1, 2 and 3 spiders: 8, 16, 24. Stop at 40 and 80 and ask what comes next: 48 and 88 keep the tens digit.

Can I print the 8s as a worksheet?

Under the strip, Print 6 counting strips prints six strips of the 8s, none past 88, with the answers on a second sheet. Print the chart gives it alone. For whole rows, open skip counting worksheets and choose Count by 8s to 96.

All 15 jumps

8 to 40: the ones digits go 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 5

  • 0 + 8 = 8 One spider has 8 legs and one octopus has 8 arms.
  • 8 + 8 = 16 There are 16 ounces in a pound. The ones digit drops from 8 to 6.
  • 16 + 8 = 24 The hours in a day.
  • 24 + 8 = 32 Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and an adult usually has 32 teeth.
  • 32 + 8 = 40 The first jump that stays in one chart row: 32 and 40 both sit in row 4.

48 to 80: the same five endings, 40 higher 5

  • 40 + 8 = 48 The trap in this count: the tens digit stays at 4, because 40 + 8 does not reach 50.
  • 48 + 8 = 56 Add 10 to 48 to reach 58, then take 2 away. 56 is the days in 8 weeks.
  • 56 + 8 = 64 A chessboard has 64 squares, 8 rows of 8.
  • 64 + 8 = 72 72 is 6 dozen, and its digits 7 and 2 add up to 9.
  • 72 + 8 = 80 72 and 80 share row 8 of the chart.

88 to 120: past the end of a hundred chart 5

  • 80 + 8 = 88 After 80 comes 88, never 98. Most modern pianos have 88 keys, 52 white and 36 black.
  • 88 + 8 = 96 The last stop on a chart that ends at 100. 96 is 8 dozen.
  • 96 + 8 = 104 Go up 4 from 96 to reach 100, then add the other 4.
  • 104 + 8 = 112 112 is 56 doubled, so counting by 7 meets the 8s here for the second time.
  • 112 + 8 = 120 The last square of a 1 to 120 chart, and the minutes in 2 hours.
