How this list was compiled: Written by hand for this page on 2026-10-01: 180 sentences in three levels of 60 (3 or 4 words; 5 or 6 words; 7 words or more with a joining word such as and, but, so, because, when, if, until, before, after or while). Each is stored in order for the answer key and printed with its words mixed up by a script, which never leaves the first word first or prints the sentence as written. The word with the capital letter is the first word and the word with the end mark is the last: no sentence has a name or a second capital in the middle, except the word I in sentences that begin with I. A script listed, for every sentence, each other order worth reading: two nouns, two verbs, two describing words, two pronouns or two of the small words a, the, my and their like that could change places, a describing word or one of those small words that could move in front of another noun, and an adverb that could move. Each listed order was read on 2026-10-01, and a sentence was rewritten where another order also made a sensible sentence (A spider spun a big web could also be built as A big spider spun a web). An order that is grammatical but makes no sense (The boy purred while the cat petted it) was left. Where but or so joins two parts that could each stand as a sentence, a comma comes before it, the practice many style guides ask for as described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comma, read on 2026-10-01. Many crabs run sideways follows https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crab, read on 2026-10-01. No sentence is repeated word for word from another list on this site or its sister sites, checked by script on 2026-10-01 against every line of every list; short everyday sentences still share words with lines elsewhere. No person, brand or character is named. Licence: own work

How it works

These sentence building worksheets print the words of a sentence out of order, with lines under them to write it in the right order. The capital letter marks the first word and the end mark the last.

Read the full guide

Three levels

Set opens on Short sentences of 3 or 4 words, the level to print as making sentences worksheets for kindergarten. Longer sentences have 5 or 6 words. Joined sentences have 7 or more and a joining word such as because, so or until.

Your own sentences

Type the words mixed up, an equals sign, then the sentence for the key: park. / We / the / to / went = We went to the park. Your lines replace ours. The tool does not mix typed words for you.

  • The slashes only keep the words apart. A comma or an end mark stays on its word.

Questions and answers

Is this a sentence scramble worksheet?

Yes. Scrambled sentences worksheets, sentence scrambles and a build a sentence worksheet are names for one sheet: the words are printed out of order and the child writes the sentence underneath.

What clues does an unscramble sentences worksheet give?

Two. The word with the capital letter comes first, and the word with the period or question mark comes last. In Joined sentences a comma stays on its word too.

Are there simple sentence worksheets for beginners?

Yes. Short sentences is the set for making simple sentences worksheets: 3 or 4 everyday words, such as The horn beeped twice. With the first and last word marked, one or two words are left to place.

Can I save building sentences worksheets as a free PDF?

Yes. Press Print worksheet and choose Save as PDF in the print window. The answer key prints as the last page unless you untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options.

Is there only one right order?

The key prints one sentence for each row. Each was written, then checked by reading its other orders, so that the capital letter, the end mark and the meaning point to one sentence.
