How it works
These preschool journal ideas come on the page the class will use: one prompt in a child's words, such as This is me, above a big box to draw in. There are 120 prompts in eight themes.

Eight themes of prompts
Set picks the theme: All about me, My family and home, Feelings, Animals, Seasons and weather, Colors and shapes, Food, or Play and pretend. Each holds 15 prompts, and all 120 are listed under the tool. To print a different one, copy it into the box above the sheet.
Draw first, tell second
The page opens as one box to draw in. Under More options, Kind of sheet has Draw and write, which adds rows under the picture: an adult writes down what the child says about the drawing, or the child writes a word.
- Read the prompt aloud, then ask one question about the finished drawing and write the answer on the page.
- Boxes set to 2 prints two prompts on a sheet, one above the other, to cut into half pages.
Questions and answers
What are some journal prompts for preschool?
Short ones a child can answer with a drawing: This is me, My home, A time I felt happy, My favorite animal, Something that is red, My birthday cake, If I could fly. All 120 are listed under the tool, by theme.
How do children who cannot write yet use a journal?
On these pages they draw. The prompt is read aloud, the child draws an answer in the box and tells an adult about it. With Draw and write, the adult has rows under the picture for the child's words.
Can I use my own journal prompt?
Yes. Type it in the box above the sheet, up to 80 characters, and it replaces the sample. Type up to nine, one per line, and each gets a box of its own.
How do I make a journal to staple?
Print a page for each prompt and staple the stack along the left edge. Untick the Name and Date line, under More options, so that only the first page carries the child's name.
