How this list was compiled: Own deck of 236 cards: one symbol-to-name card and one name-to-symbol card for each of the 118 elements, hydrogen (1) to oganesson (118). Symbol, name, atomic number, category and state were read from the PubChem periodic table, US National Library of Medicine (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/periodic-table/, data file https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/rest/pug/periodictable/CSV), checked 2026-09-19. PubChem uses the American spellings aluminum, cesium and sulfur; the cards do too and accept aluminium, caesium and sulphur as typed answers. Every symbol, name, group and period was cross-checked against Wikipedia, List of chemical elements (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_chemical_elements), checked 2026-09-19; all 118 agreed. Group and period follow the standard 18-column layout. The 15 lanthanides (57 to 71) and 15 actinides (89 to 103) carry no group number, because IUPAC states that the make-up of group 3 is still under review (https://iupac.org/what-we-do/periodic-table-of-elements/, table dated 4 May 2022, checked 2026-09-19). The ten category sets follow PubChem, which files polonium as a metalloid, astatine and tennessine as halogens, and zinc, cadmium, mercury and copernicium as transition metals; other tables draw some of these lines differently. "Other nonmetals" is PubChem's "Nonmetal" block: hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur and selenium. A state at room temperature is printed only where PubChem and Wikipedia agree. For astatine, francium and elements 100 to 118 PubChem gives a state or an expected state and Wikipedia lists the phase as unknown, so those 21 cards leave it out. "Synthetic" marks elements 95 to 118, as in the origin column of the Wikipedia list. The origins of the 11 symbols that do not come from the English name (Na, K, Fe, Cu, Ag, Sn, Sb, W, Au, Hg, Pb) were read from the same Wikipedia list, checked 2026-09-19. The sentences on the cards are our own wording. Licence: own work
How it works
These periodic table flashcards cover every element from hydrogen to oganesson, 118 in all. The front shows a symbol such as Fe. The back gives the name, atomic number, category, group and period. A second run of 118 goes from name to symbol.

18 sets and 3 modes
Under Show only, First 20 stops at calcium and First 36 at krypton, the end of period 4. Ten sets follow PubChem's categories, from 6 alkali metals to 38 transition metals. 11 odd symbols holds Na, K, Fe, Cu, Ag, Sn, Sb, W, Au, Hg and Pb, which do not come from the English name. All shuffles both directions, 236 cards. Press Quiz to type the answers. Press Timed, pick a length, then Start round. Each length keeps a best score.
Printing the cards
On paper these are table of elements flash cards 60 mm square, 12 to a sheet, in atomic number order. Pick a set, turn a card and press the first Print button. Print double-sided, flip on the long edge, and Hydrogen lands behind H. The first 20 take 2 sheets, the first 36 take 3, All 118 symbols takes 10 and All, both directions, 20. No two-sided printer? Press the fold-over button. Choose Missed to reprint only missed cards.
Learn the 11 odd symbols as the old names they shorten: Au is aurum, Ag is argentum, Pb is plumbum, W is the German Wolfram.
Quiz ignores capital letters, so it marks co right for cobalt. On paper the capitals matter: Co is cobalt, CO is carbon monoxide.
Cut out, the symbol fronts double as periodic table element cards. Deal out all 118 and have groups sort them into the ten categories.
Questions and answers
Do these periodic table flash cards cover all 118 elements?
Yes, all 118, to nihonium, moscovium, tennessine and oganesson, the names IUPAC announced in November 2016. Names, symbols and numbers were checked against PubChem and Wikipedia on 19 September 2026. Where the two disagree on the state at room temperature, 21 cards leave it out.
Why is polonium a metalloid here and a metal in other tables?
Sources draw some lines differently. These sets follow PubChem, which files polonium as a metalloid, astatine as a halogen, and zinc, cadmium and mercury as transition metals. Lanthanides and actinides carry a period but no group number: IUPAC says group 3 is still under review.
Which spellings does the quiz accept?
The cards use the American spellings aluminum, cesium and sulfur, and quiz mode also accepts aluminium, caesium and sulphur. Accents and punctuation are ignored. Everything else must be spelled in full: fluorine has its u before its o.
