Questions and answers

What are the 8 phases of the moon in order?

New moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent. That is NASA's list; the seventh is also known as last quarter, the name on the first grid.

Why is it called a first quarter moon when it looks half lit?

Quarter refers to how far the Moon is through its cycle around Earth, not to its shape. At first quarter you see half of the lit half, which is why people casually call it a half moon.

How long does the moon take to go through all its phases?

About 29.5 days, one lunar month. The Moon's trip around Earth measured against the stars takes about 27.3 days, so the phases need about 2.2 days more.

Is there a printable moon phases word search with the key?

Yes. The sheet is one page and the key the next, on Letter or A4. Tick Show clues, not words, and Full moon prints as "The fifth phase: opposite the Sun, with the whole day side turned toward Earth."
