An ESL clothing unit, easiest list first
For beginners, pick Short and Easy: Shirt, Pants, Dress, Socks, Shoes and Coat are among its 12 words. Move up to Everyday Clothes, 23 words, or Cold and Wet Weather, then to Shoes and Socks and Hats and Accessories. Under the word list the sheet prints a task: draw a person wearing three of the words and label each one.
Fabric and sewing words for family and consumer science
Fabrics and Patterns holds 23 words, from Cotton and Denim to Corduroy and Polka dots, and Sewing and Garment Parts adds Hem, Pleat and Drawstring.
- Coat is in the list, so Raincoat is not: no word here hides inside another one.
Questions and answers
What clothing words are in the puzzle?
134, in seven themes: Everyday Clothes, Cold and Wet Weather, Shoes and Socks, Hats and Accessories, Uniforms, Sports and Dress-Up, Fabrics and Patterns, and Sewing and Garment Parts. Three more lists hold the 28 starter words, 12 short words and 36 long ones.
Does it work for an ESL class?
Yes. Short and Easy holds 12 words of 3 to 5 letters, and on the Easy level words run only across and down. The spellings are American, so the lists have Pants, Sneakers and Pajamas, and Trousers is defined as the British word for pants.
Which clothing clues carry a word history?
Denim, Jeans, Pajamas and Khakis. Denim is short for serge de Nîmes, after a city in France, and Jeans comes from Gênes, the French name for Genoa. Pajamas is from Persian words for leg garment, and Khakis from one that means dusty.
What age is this word search for?
Short and Easy suits kindergarten to grade 2, and beginners in English of any age. The themed lists fit grades 3 to 6. The fabric and sewing lists were written for a middle or high school family and consumer science class.
