How this list was compiled: Term list chosen for this site on 2026-10-09. Each meaning is written in our own words and was checked that day in two dictionaries: the entry for the term in Wiktionary, the free dictionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, and the entry in the Cambridge Dictionary (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/). Startup was read under start-up in the second dictionary. Every sum in an example was worked out and checked a second time. The example after each meaning is our own; the companies in the examples are made up. Licence: own work

Under the tool each term sits in a sentence to read aloud, such as "The budget is first on the agenda."

  • The prices and rates in the examples are made up, and the sheet gives no advice about money.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between revenue and profit?

Revenue is all the income a company earns from sales. Profit is what is left once the costs are taken away. Sales of 500 dollars with costs of 350 dollars give revenue of 500 dollars and a profit of 150.

What is the difference between an import and an export?

An import is something a country buys from abroad. An export is something it sells to buyers abroad. The same shipment is an export for the country that sends it and an import for the one that receives it.

What is a tariff?

A tax that a government places on imported goods. A tariff of 10 percent on an import priced at 200 dollars adds 20 dollars.
