Questions and answers
What are study skills?
Study skills are the methods a student uses to take in, organize and remember new information and to get ready for tests: note-taking, close reading, memory aids such as mnemonics, concentration and managing time.
What is a mnemonic?
A mnemonic is a memory aid, such as a rhyme, a phrase or a formula. Acronyms and acrostics are two kinds: each builds a word or a sentence from the first letters of the things to recall.
What is the difference between skimming and scanning?
Skimming is reading a text quickly for clues to its main idea. Scanning is looking through the text for particular information. Both words are in the Reading and Note-Taking list.
What is the difference between a paraphrase and a summary?
A paraphrase restates a passage in other words, often to make its meaning clearer. A summary is a brief statement of the main points only, so it is shorter than the text it sums up.
