How it works

This free printable reading log with summary opens on Monday to Friday, each night with the book title, the pages and a wide box for the summary. Other sheets run seven nights, follow one novel by chapter or give each book a block.

Print the week, then write a little each night

Press Print the reading log. The reader writes the title, the pages read and what happened in the Summary box. The box has no ruled lines, so large and small handwriting both fit. For a signature each night, pick the sheet with a Parent signature column.

Other ways to keep a reading log with summary

The chapter log keeps one novel on a page, a row for each chapter. One book to a block prints four blocks with Title, Author, Date finished and five ruled lines. A young reader can draw what happened and write on two wide lines. The last sheet is a filled-in sample.

  • Ask the reader to say the summary aloud first: who did what, and what changed.
  • Show the filled-in sample before the first week, so the class sees how short a summary can be.
