How a decimal is read

Read the whole number, say and for the point, read the digits after the point as one whole number, then name the place of the last digit: 4.81 is four and eighty-one hundredths. Below 1 there is no and: 0.6 is six tenths. Common Core puts tenths and hundredths in grade 4 (4.NF.6) and number names to thousandths in grade 5 (5.NBT.3a).

Where pupils slip

A zero after the point changes the place, not the words: three and seven hundredths is 3.07, and forty-eight thousandths is 0.048. Hundredths with a zero after the point: 3.07 and 0.09 and Small thousandths from their names: 0.004 and 0.048 drill that. Everyday speech says three point zero seven, and that reading is right too.

  • Have pupils say the name aloud before writing: the last word tells how many digits follow the point.
  • No number on these sheets ends in a zero, so each name has one right numeral.

Questions and answers

How do you read a decimal in words?

Read the whole number part, say and for the decimal point, read the digits after the point as a whole number, and finish with the place of the last digit. 12.09 is twelve and nine hundredths; 0.412 is four hundred twelve thousandths.

Do you say and when you read a decimal?

In United States school number names, and stands for the decimal point and appears nowhere else: 245.7 is two hundred forty-five and seven tenths. A number below 1 has no and, so 0.39 is thirty-nine hundredths.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The key prints as the last page, with every numeral or every name written out. The Answer key box starts ticked; untick it before you press Print to get the sheet alone.

Does this work as a decimal number forms review worksheet?

For two of the forms. Every sheet moves between standard form, the digits, and word form, the number name, and four sheets ask both ways on one page. Expanded form is on the decimal place value page.

Tenths 3

  • Tenths beside a 2-digit whole number, both ways Twenty-seven and six tenths is 27.6, since 27 + 6/10 = 27.6. Half the lines give the words and ask for the digits, and half go the other way. Whole numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine carry a hyphen: 81.4 is eighty-one and four tenths.
  • Tenths in digits, write the words 7.3 is seven and three tenths: 7.3 = 7 + 3/10. A number below 1 has no whole part to read, so 0.6 is six tenths, with no and. A single tenth loses its s: 2.1 is two and one tenth. Ten numerals, each over a ruled line.
  • Tenths in words, write the digits Four and eight tenths is 4.8, since 4 + 8/10 = 4.8. The word and stands for the decimal point, and tenths says one digit follows it. Twelve names, from one tenth up to nine and nine tenths, with a short line for the digits.

Hundredths 6

  • Hundredths below 1, words to digits Forty-eight hundredths is 0.48 and four hundredths is 0.04: 48/100 = 0.48 and 4/100 = 0.04. No number here has a whole part, so no name has the word and. Pupils write a 0 before the point each time.
  • Hundredths beside a 2-digit whole number, both ways Seventy-four and twenty-four hundredths is 74.24, since 74 + 24/100 = 74.24. The same words come twice with different jobs: twenty-four before the and counts ones, and twenty-four after it counts hundredths. Words on half the lines, digits on the rest.
  • Hundredths beside a 2-digit whole number, write the words 36.05 is thirty-six and five hundredths: 36.05 = 36 + 5/100. The longest names of the hundredths group, each with a hyphen on one side of the and or on both, as in 58.43, fifty-eight and forty-three hundredths. Ten numerals.
  • Hundredths in digits, write the words 0.75 is seventy-five hundredths, since 0.75 = 75/100. Every numeral has two digits after the point, so every name ends in hundredths, or in hundredth when there is one: 9.01 is nine and one hundredth. Ten numerals, each over a ruled line.
  • Hundredths in words, write the digits Four and eighty-one hundredths is 4.81, since 4 + 81/100 = 4.81. The two digits after the point are read together as one whole number, eighty-one, and hundredths names the place of the last digit. Twelve names to turn into numerals.
  • Hundredths with a zero after the point: 3.07 and 0.09 Three and seven hundredths is 3.07, since 3 + 7/100 = 3.07, and nine hundredths is 0.09. Half the names on the sheet need a 0 in the tenths place. Writing the 7 straight after the point gives 3.7, which is three and seven tenths.

Thousandths 5

  • Small thousandths from their names: 0.004 and 0.048 Four thousandths is 0.004 and forty-eight thousandths is 0.048: 4/1000 = 0.004 and 48/1000 = 0.048. Every number is below one tenth, so each needs one or two zeros after the point before its digits. Twelve names.
  • Thousandths below 1 in digits, write the words 0.905 is nine hundred five thousandths and 0.006 is six thousandths: 0.905 = 905/1000. A 0 after the point is never said; it only moves the other digits to their places. Ten numerals with no whole part.
  • Thousandths below 1 in words, write the digits Four hundred eighty-one thousandths is 0.481, since 481/1000 = 0.481. Thousandths means three digits after the point, so thirty-nine thousandths is 0.039 with a 0 in the tenths place. Twelve names, none with a whole part.
  • Thousandths beside a whole number, both ways Twenty and two hundred ninety-seven thousandths is 20.297, since 20 + 297/1000 = 20.297. Whole parts run from 1 to 99. Half the lines give the words and half the digits, so pupils read and write thousandths on one sheet.
  • Thousandths in digits, write the words 4.812 is four and eight hundred twelve thousandths: 4.812 = 4 + 812/1000. The three digits after the point are read as one whole number with no and inside it. Ten numerals from 0.001 to 9.999, each over ruled lines.

Tenths, hundredths and thousandths on one sheet 4

  • Decimals to thousandths in digits, write the words One, two or three digits after the point: 0.4 is four tenths, 0.41 is forty-one hundredths and 0.412 is four hundred twelve thousandths. Check: 0.412 = 412/1000. Pupils count the digits after the point to choose the last word. Ten numerals.
  • Hundredths or thousandths? Words to digits, zeros to place Five and six hundredths is 5.06 and five and six thousandths is 5.006: 5 + 6/100 = 5.06 and 5 + 6/1000 = 5.006. At least half the names are thousandths, and one in four needs a 0 straight after the point.
  • Tenths or hundredths? Read and write both ways The sheet the page opens on. Seven and one tenth is 7.1 and one and ninety-five hundredths is 1.95: 7 + 1/10 = 7.1 and 1 + 95/100 = 1.95. The last word of a name tells how many digits follow the point. Ten lines, words on half and digits on half.
  • Which place is named? Words to digits, to thousandths Names in tenths, hundredths and thousandths on one sheet: seventy-five hundredths is 0.75, and seventy-five thousandths is 0.075, since 75/100 = 0.75 and 75/1000 = 0.075. The same seventy-five lands in a different place each time.

With hundreds in the whole number 3

  • Hundreds with tenths or hundredths, words to digits Five hundred thirty-three and six hundredths is 533.06, since 533 + 6/100 = 533.06. The whole number has no and inside it in United States school usage, so the one and in the name marks the point. Twelve names with whole parts from 100 to 999.
  • Hundreds with tenths, write the words 134.8 is one hundred thirty-four and eight tenths: 134.8 = 134 + 8/10. Pupils write the whole number first with no and, then and for the point, then the tenths. Ten numerals from 100.1 to 999.9.
  • Hundreds with thousandths, both ways Seven hundred forty-two and four hundred eight thousandths is 742.408, since 742 + 408/1000 = 742.408. Six digits and the longest names on the page: the word hundred can stand on both sides of the and. Ten lines, words on half and digits on half.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of sheet types, written on 2026-10-01. Every sheet moves between a decimal in digits and its number name, in one direction or both. The names follow United States school usage: the word and stands for the decimal point and is used nowhere else in a name. Wikipedia, English numerals, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_numerals, read 2026-10-01, describes this reading (a cardinal number, then and, then a second cardinal number with its place) as mainly a United States one, beside the everyday reading with point. Every worked example was checked twice with exact arithmetic by two separate programs, and sheets of every type were made by the tool and each printed name was read back into its numeral by a separate program. Standards read on 2026-10-01 in the full text of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (California Department of Education copy, https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/ccssmathstandardaug2013.pdf): 4.NF.6 (use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100; for example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100) and 5.NBT.3a (read and write decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form). The standards body has not reviewed these sheets. Licence: own work
