How this list was compiled: Every word joins a starting sound to a spelling pattern whose sound is fixed by a real rhyming word (lip, bath, safe, coin, firm); the list was built for this page on 2026-09-20. No published nonsense word list was read or copied. A candidate was thrown out when it, or another spelling of the same sounds, is a real word. The word list used for that check is ENABLE (enable1 and ENABLE2K), which its authors released into the public domain: README at https://github.com/BartMassey/wordlists (read 2026-09-20). A second net was the macOS system word list and the pronunciations in the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict , BSD-style licence, read 2026-09-20), so a nonsense spelling that sounds like a real word (a homophone, a plural, a past tense) was dropped too. None of those lists is reproduced here. Rude words, words that sound rude, slang, brand and character names, common first names and common Spanish, French and German words were removed with a block list, and then every one of the words was read again. Nineteen short-vowel words that the pronouncing dictionary holds only as a rare surname or place (Dutt, Jubb, Lomb, Rupp and the like) were let through on purpose. The line under each word names the parts the word was built from. Left out on purpose because the spelling can be read two ways: ea, ow, soft c and soft g, y as a vowel, wa and wo, and endings such as alt, olt, ost, ind and old. No ew word passed the sounds-like-a-real-word check, so the vowel teams are ai, ay, ee, oa, oo, oi, oy, aw, ou and igh. Licence: own work
How it works
This nonsense word generator opens on five made-up words, each with a real word that it rhymes with. Press Pick 5 new nonsense words, or change All nonsense words to one spelling pattern. Every word was checked against a public word list.
Read the full guide
Pick words for one pattern
1. Change All nonsense words to one of the 9 patterns, such as Silent e. 2. Press Pick 5 new nonsense words. Under each word is how to read it: tafe rhymes with safe, because the e is silent. 3. Set Show to 1 for the board or 20 for a list, then press Copy the list.
How the words were checked
Each word joins a starting sound to the ending of a real word, so chom is read like mom. A word was thrown out if it, or another spelling of its sounds, is in ENABLE, a public domain list of more than 170,000 English words. Rude words, slang and names were blocked, and every word was then read again.
Tell pupils the words are made up before they start, so nobody tries to turn vop into a word they know.
When a pattern is secure, move to real words with the CVC words worksheets, which print real words where this page invents them.
Questions and answers
What is a nonsense word?
A nonsense word, also called a pseudoword or made-up word, follows English spelling patterns but means nothing: vop, chom, tafe. A pupil cannot have memorized it, so reading it aloud shows whether they can turn letters into sounds and blend them.
Are any of these real words?
None is in the ENABLE word list, and spellings that only sound like a real word were removed too. Nineteen of the short vowel words match a rare surname or place name. If you spot a real word, please report it through the contact page.
What are CVC nonsense words?
CVC means consonant, vowel, consonant, with a short vowel in the middle: beb, fim, gom. The Short vowel group holds 91 of them, plus 5 two-letter VC words such as ix. Choose it for pupils who are starting to blend three sounds.
Which phonics patterns are covered?
Short vowel (VC, CVC), digraphs, double letters, blend first (CCVC), blend last (CVCC), silent e, vowel teams, r-controlled and two syllables. Vowel teams are ai, ay, ee, oa, oo, oi, oy, aw, ou and igh, not ea or ow, which have more than one sound.
How do I use nonsense words in class?
Show one word and ask pupils to say each sound, then blend them. For a one-to-one check, set Show to 20, copy the list and note which patterns the pupil misreads. The rhyming word under each one settles which vowel sound to accept.
