Short words for juniors, long ones for the clubhouse
Easy Golf Words keeps to short ones such as Tee, Par, Cup, Putt and Chip. Hard Golf Words has Leaderboard, Provisional, Rangefinder and Etiquette.
- Two-word terms lose the gap in the grid: Front nine reads FRONTNINE, and Tap-in reads TAPIN.
- Hook and Slice clues are written for a right-hander; for a left-hander each curve goes the other way.
Questions and answers
What do birdie, eagle and albatross mean in golf?
They are scores on one hole, counted against par, the standard number of strokes. A birdie is one stroke under par, an eagle two under and an albatross three under. A bogey is one over. All five words are in Scoring Words.
Why are Putter and Pin missing from the lists?
PUTT sits inside PUTTER and PIN inside BACKSPIN, so a grid could show the short word in two places. Putt, Backspin and Flagstick are in the lists. Type Putter or Pin at the end of the word list to add either one.
What is the difference between a hook and a slice?
Both curve hard off line. For a right-handed golfer a hook bends to the left and a slice to the right. The gentler versions, often played on purpose, are the draw and the fade. All four are in Shots and Swings.
What is a mulligan in golf?
A mulligan is a do-over: a shot replayed without counting the first try. The rules do not allow it and tournaments do not use it, but it is common in casual rounds. The word is in the Scoring Words list.
