Flag, parade and 1776
The easy list is the flag and the band: Red, White, Flag, Drum. Medium, the opening sheet, holds Sparkler, Bunting and Cookout. The hard list is history: Declaration, Independence, Philadelphia and Revolution.
Summer school or the family table
Use it in the last week before summer break or at a July 4 cookout while the grill heats. Play puts one scramble on the screen at a time, which suits a crowd.
- After the sheet, ask why Thirteen is on the list: the flag has 13 stripes for the 13 colonies.
Questions and answers
What does the Fourth of July celebrate?
The adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. Declaration and Philadelphia are both on the hard list.
What grades are these Fourth of July word puzzles for?
The easy list suits kindergarten and grade 1 with hints on. Medium suits grades 2 and 3, and the hard list, up to 12 letters, suits grade 4 and up.
Does each scramble have one answer?
Yes. Stripes (sprites), Nation (anoint) and Marching (charming) were left out because their letters spell a second word.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The answers print on their own page after the puzzle, so you can hand out the scrambles at the cookout and keep the key in your pocket.
