This football word scramble holds 30 American football words: plays, positions, the field and the officials. The long words carry the scoring facts, and the answer key prints on its own page.

Read the full guide

From Kick to Interception

The easy list is plays: Kick, Punt, Rush, Block. Medium, the opening sheet, holds Huddle, Fumble, Referee and Offside. The hard list is positions and scoring: Quarterback, Linebacker, Touchdown and Field goal.

Game day or gym class

Hand out a sheet in a football unit, or at a game-day party before kickoff. Play shows one scramble at a time on the screen, and the first fan to shout the word wins it.

  • Ask for the points after the sheet: a touchdown is worth 6 and a field goal 3, and both are hard-list words.

Questions and answers

What age is this football word scramble for?

The easy list suits grades 1 and 2 with hints on. Medium suits grades 3 and 4, and the hard list, with Interception at 12 letters, suits grade 5 and up.

Is it American football or soccer?

American football. Words such as Touchdown, Quarterback and Down are from the American game; a soccer sheet would need a different list.

Does each scramble have one answer?

Yes. Snap (pans), Team (meat) and Penalty (aplenty) were left out because their letters spell a second word.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The key prints on a page of its own after the scramble sheet, so a coach or teacher can hand out the sheets and keep the answers on the sideline.
