How this list was compiled: Own list of Spanish and French words that look like English words and differ from them in meaning, chosen for this site on 2026-10-12, in three sets of twelve. The spelling, accent marks, gender and meaning of every Spanish and French word on the sheet were read that day in two references: the word's entry in Wiktionary, the free dictionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/carpeta, the same address pattern for each word), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, and the Cambridge Spanish-English and French-English dictionaries (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/spanish-english/carpeta and https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/french-english/coin, the same patterns). The 24 Spanish words were read again that day in the Diccionario de la lengua española of the Real Academia Española (https://dle.rae.es/carpeta, the same pattern, in the copies of those pages kept at web.archive.org) and the 12 French words in the Larousse dictionary (https://www.larousse.fr/dictionnaires/francais/coin, the same pattern). The Spanish or French word given in each note for the English look-alike was read in the Cambridge English-Spanish and English-French dictionaries (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english-spanish/carpet, the same pattern) and in its own Wiktionary entry. The answers under the list rest on the articles False friend and False cognate of English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, and on the dictionary entries embarazada, avergonzado and mucho.
