Questions and answers

What is the difference between MIG and TIG welding?

MIG welding feeds a wire through the welding gun; the wire is the electrode and is used up in the weld. TIG welding uses a tungsten electrode that is not used up, and filler metal is normally added. Both shield the weld with gas.

What is stick welding?

Stick welding is the informal name for shielded metal arc welding. An electric current forms an arc between the metal and an electrode covered in flux, and the electrode is used up as the weld is laid.

What is the difference between welding, brazing and soldering?

Welding melts the parts themselves so that they fuse as they cool. Brazing and soldering work at lower temperatures and do not melt the base metal: a filler metal flows into the joint and bonds the parts.

What are the five types of welding joints?

Butt, corner, edge, lap and tee. In a butt joint the two pieces lie in the same plane, in a lap joint they overlap, and in a tee joint they are perpendicular.

What are the parts of a fillet weld?

Five: the root, the toes, the face, the legs and the throat. The root is the deepest part, the face is the surface you see, the toes are the edges of the face and the legs are the other two sides.
