Emergent The layer of towering trees that poke out above all the rest.
Equator The Congo river crosses this circle twice; it lies halfway between the two poles.
Forest Floor The bottom layer, where little light reaches and dead leaves rot.
Humid Moist and steamy, as air is when it carries plenty of water vapor.
Jungle A thick tangle of trees and undergrowth in a hot country.
Leaf Litter Dead plant bits such as twigs and bark that have fallen to the ground.
Rainfall The amount of water that drops from the clouds on a place.
Shade Shelter from the sun; plants under tall trees must grow in it.

New Guinea The world's second-largest island; it holds the third-largest rainforest left on Earth.
Oxbow A curved pool left when a stream cuts across one of its own wide bends.
Riverbank The strip of ground alongside a stream or creek.
Sumatra A large island of western Indonesia; only five islands in the world are larger.

Camouflage The trick of blending in, as a katydid shaped like a leaf does.

Decomposer An organism that feeds on dead matter and frees its nutrients.
Deforestation The removal of woodland by people who turn the ground over to other uses.
Fungi The kingdom of living things that includes molds, yeasts and mushrooms.
Humus Dark matter in soil made of rotted plants and animals.
Mimicry Looking like something else, often another kind of animal.
Nectar The sugary liquid that flowers make, which draws in the animals that pollinate them.

Rainforest Layers and Climate holds 15 words. Four name the layers a class draws: Emergent, Canopy, Understory and Forest Floor. The rest are words such as Buttress, Humid and Equator. Rainforest Plants and Trees has 17, from Orchid and Liana to Strangler Fig.

What are the layers of the rainforest in the puzzle?

Emergent, Canopy, Understory and Forest Floor. The emergent layer is the towering trees above the rest, the canopy is the crowded roof of crowns, the understory is the dim layer beneath, and the forest floor gets little light.

Which rainforest animals are on the list?

Rainforest Animals has 17: Jaguar, Toucan, Sloth, Macaw, Anaconda, Tapir, Piranha, Tree Frog, Dart Frog, Harpy Eagle, Kinkajou, Agouti, Morpho, Quetzal, Hoatzin, Tarsier and Peccary. The Tarsier's clue places it on the islands of Southeast Asia.

Do chocolate and vanilla really come from tropical plants?

Yes. Foods from the Tropics holds 9 words. Cacao seeds are made into chocolate, Vanilla comes from an orchid, Cinnamon is peeled from the bark of a tree, and the Brazil Nut tree is one of the largest in the Amazon.

Why is Rain missing when Rainfall is on the list?

RAIN is the first four letters of RAINFALL, so a grid could show it twice and the key only once. Rain has its own place in the nature word search.
