Consumer Math Worksheets

Sales tax, tips, discounts, interest, pay and unit prices as short problems, with every rate printed in the problem.

6 problems. Sales tax: the price times a rate from 0.05 to 0.09. Sheet 456CSS, with its answer key.

How it works

These consumer math worksheets turn everyday money questions into one-step problems: the sales tax on a $40.00 lamp, a 15% tip, a week of pay, the price of one pound. Every rate is printed in its problem.

Percents worked as decimals

The tax, tip, discount and interest sheets write each rate as a decimal and multiply: a 15% tip on $36.00 is 0.15 × $36.00 = $5.40. Fixed-rate sheets name the percent and print its decimal beside it. Each sheet asks for the tax, tip or discount itself; adding it to the price or taking it off is a second step to do aloud.

Print with the answers

Each sheet prints with its answer key as the last page, number sentences included. For consumer math worksheets with answers pdf, press Print and choose Save as PDF in the print window. Press Make a new sheet first for new prices and rates.

  • Ask for an estimate first: 10% of the price, then double it for a 20% tip.
  • Have students say what the answer is, a tax, a tip or a total, before they compute.
  • Follow each discount problem by asking for the sale price aloud.

Questions and answers

What is consumer math?

It is the arithmetic of everyday buying, earning and paying: sales tax, tips, discounts, unit prices, wages, bills and interest. These sheets practice each as a one-step problem in dollars and cents, with decimals and percents written as decimals.

How do you find the sales tax on a price?

Write the tax rate as a decimal and multiply. At a rate of 0.08, which is 8%, a $40.00 lamp is taxed 0.08 × $40.00 = $3.20. Every rate on these sheets is made up and printed in its problem.

How do you work out a 15% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.15. On a $36.00 meal that is 0.15 × $36.00 = $5.40. A quick check: 10% is $3.60 and half of that is $1.80, which together make $5.40.

What is a unit price?

The cost of one unit, such as one pound or one ounce. Divide the total price by the number of units: a 6-pound bag at $7.80 costs $7.80 ÷ 6 = $1.30 a pound. Comparing unit prices shows which size costs less per unit.

Tax, tips, discounts and interest 6

  • 10% off: the discount is the price times 0.1 How much a 10% discount takes off. A coat marked $47.80 loses 0.1 × $47.80 = $4.78. The sheet asks for the discount, not the sale price.
  • 25% off: the discount is the price times 0.25 A quarter of the price. A game marked $49.44 loses 0.25 × $49.44 = $12.36. Every discount is a whole number of cents.
  • A 15% tip: the bill times 0.15 A bill in whole dollars and a 15% tip. On a $36.00 meal the tip is 0.15 × $36.00 = $5.40.
  • A 20% tip: the bill times 0.2 Bills in dollars and cents. On a $47.80 bill a 20% tip is 0.2 × $47.80 = $9.56. Every tip comes out to a whole number of cents.
  • Sales tax: the price times a rate from 0.05 to 0.09 A price in whole dollars and a tax rate written as a decimal, from 0.05 (5%) to 0.09 (9%). A $40.00 lamp at 0.08 is taxed 0.08 × $40.00 = $3.20. Every rate is made up and printed in its problem. The page opens on this sheet.
  • Simple interest for one year A balance in whole dollars and a yearly rate written as a decimal, from 0.02 to 0.05. $400.00 at 0.05 earns 0.05 × $400.00 = $20.00 in one year. Every rate is made up and printed in its problem.

Pay 2

  • A week of pay or rent for a year: times 52 A weekly amount carried through a year of 52 weeks. $229.44 a week is 52 × $229.44 = $11,930.88 a year.
  • Pay: hours times an hourly rate An hourly rate and 4 to 40 hours. 21 hours at $12.39 an hour pay 21 × $12.39 = $260.19 before anything is taken out.

Bills 3

  • A monthly bill for a year: times 12 What a monthly charge adds up to. A plan at $20.99 a month costs 12 × $20.99 = $251.88 a year.
  • Two bills: what do they come to? Two amounts between $20 and $100 to add. An electric bill of $81.04 and a water bill of $58.49 come to $81.04 + $58.49 = $139.53.
  • What is left after one bill is paid A larger amount and one bill to take from it. A $493.36 paycheck less a $58.49 bus pass leaves $493.36 − $58.49 = $434.87.

Unit prices 1

  • Unit price: the cost of one pound, ounce or foot A total price and how many units it buys. A 6-pound bag of rice at $7.80 costs $7.80 ÷ 6 = $1.30 a pound. Every unit price is a whole number of cents.

How this list was compiled: Own list of sheet types and own story templates, written 2026-10-01. Every price, wage, tax rate, tip rate and interest rate is made up, drawn fresh for each sheet and stated inside its problem; no real shop, bank, employer, brand or current rate is quoted, and nothing here is advice about money, credit or tax. All amounts are whole cents, and every worked example was checked with exact arithmetic.
